Wedding tipping questions

For normal people.....

My brother wants to know what Maitre Ds usually get tipped.  The place is telling him that on top of the 18% gratuity they usually get tipped an additional 5%. He is having 200 people.  It seems like a lot for one person for one night, as the staff is already sharing the 18% tip.  If I'm wrong and someone is in the industry please explain.

Also, he doesn't want a tip jar out on the bar, but wants to adequately tip the bartender (there will be one).  Did anyone do this and how much?

Re: Wedding tipping questions

  • for us the tip for the matire d was included in our total cost. i want to say he got 200 for the night for our contract. we had 178 people

as for the bartender i don't know what a good amount is. but i can tell you this EVEN when there is not a tip jar. ken and i throw the bartender some money.

  • Ours was 18% for the Staff and an additional 4% for the matire d

  • Our staff got 12% gratuity and we gave our maitre d a flat $400 which he was very pleased with and gave us free room and dinner on our anniversary the following year.
  • My Dad gave the Maitre D a flat amount - 300 or 400.  I can't remember.  We had just under 200 people.

  • We tipped our bartenders $150 each, Matre D - $300 and Bridal Consultant (she helped me) - $200
  • What people don't realize (and it isn't always the case, but is much of the time) is that the 18-20% "gratuity" that is stated in your contract isn't always exactly that.  I know at Florentine Gardens that "gratuity" is actually payroll money.  It's how the waiters/waitresses get paid.  It's not ADDITIONAL to what their payroll is.  That is why they are probably suggesting additional $$.

This isn't a wedding, but we just threw my mom a surprise 60th, and tipped the staff as a whole 500.00 to be spread amongst all of them (obvi maitr d gets most..)

  • I can't specifically remember, but I know it was at least a few hundred dollars. We had about 200 people.
