Jillian Michaels vs. Tracy Anderson

Alright ladies I am wanting to shed some extra weight before the hubby and I think about starting a family and am wondering which workout DVD Queen you recommend?  I have done some of Jillian's workouts and liked then, but hear amazing things about Tracy Anderson as well.  I am also seeing that there is now a "Ripped in 30" from Jillian and was wondering if this is any different/better than the stand-by "30 Day Shred" that I have seen out for awhile now.  Any reviews would be great.  I am mainly wanting to tone up and lost about 5-10 lbs. and the gym just wasn't motivating me enough.  Thanks ladies!

Re: Jillian Michaels vs. Tracy Anderson

  • I think most people on here think Tracy Anderson is a scam artist. I would probably stick to Jillian. She has many more workouts!

  • Tracy Anderson is a crackpot and her "diet plan" is the reason that Gwyneth Paltrow was diagnosed with osteoporosis in her thirties.  She also says women shouldn't lift more than three pounds--I guess we should never pick up a baby or carry groceries.

  • I was really hoping this would be about some sort of celebrity boxing match.
  • If you're hearing amazing things about Tracy Anderson, you're listening to the wrong sources.

Jillian's "Ripped in 30" is like her Shred only harder. Same concept -- short, high-intensity workout. Only harder. Good stuff though. Not a fitness program on its own, IMO (best incorporated with other exercise), but great workouts.

Jillian is a legitimate trainer, Tracy Anderson is a quack. She's also a scam artist -- Google it.

I have many Jillian DVDs and Ripped in 30 is my favorite so far. It's like 30 Shred on steroids and so much more fun! My next favorite is her Yoga Meltdown. I agree they are all a supplement to a fitness program. I rotate all these with the running and the P90X Ab Ripper DVD.

  • Definitely go with Jillian!
  • I completely agree with everyone that has posted. JM is awesome, great workouts. I would definitely mix her workouts with other forms of exercise.
  • Sorry, but neither.  They are both quacks IMO.  Tracy for the reasons stated above and JM because of her sales of "detox/cleansing" products and "lose 5 lbs in 7 days" tea drinks.

To me, that just means that she sold out on some product endorsements for the paycheck. It's disappointing, but it doesn't take away from the fact that her exercise and eating (i.e. non-supplement/detox) philosophies are legit.

  • She says you shouldn't complete her workouts with more than 3 lbs.  This is because you are doing a lot of very quick reps.  So instead of lifting 15 lbs. 20 times you are lifting 3 lbs. over a 100 times using many different angles.  I'm pretty sure I never heard her say you should never lift more than three pounds EVER.  My arms look amazing.  If you want bigger more muscular arms use heavy weights and low reps if you want feminine arms with a little definition when flexed use smaller weights and higher reps.  Its up to you and what type of body you want.  I have seen amazing results with her workouts and they are fun.  Which in the end is the most important thing.  If they aren't fun than you wont do them and if you aren't doing them they won't work no matter how great they are.  I am healthy and I feel strong.  I've tried Jillian's workouts before and she is smart and knows her stuff, but they just made my large "soccer" thighs thicker and more toned.  Tracy's workouts have made my legs smaller, but still toned.  I don't know how she does it or if any of her methods are really scientifically proven.  But I don't need to be a scientist (even though I am) to know that my results have been AMAZING.  I do not do her diet plan because it isn't realistic when you are cooking for two but that does not mean her workout isn't any good.
