Anyone ever have an Epidural Steroid or Cortisone Injection?

Your experience ?? This is up for discussion at my next dr's visit.

Re: Anyone ever have an Epidural Steroid or Cortisone Injection?

  • I've had several cortisone injections in my ankle but they never seemed to really do much for me.

  • my husband does. every 3 months. ironically, he is a spine surgeon with a terrible back. the shots are what he is using to delay surgery as long as he can.   he has been getting them fro about 3 years and its been a godsend.

  • I have had a ton of epidural steroid injections in my back and they do work, but only for like 3 months at a time.  But it is good for temporary relief.

does he do the epidural or the cortisone?

  • well, he has a corticosteroid/ and or pain med injected in to his epidural space. I am not exactly sure how you are using the terms... an epidural steroid injection IS an injection of cortisone. you can inject corticosteroids elsewhere, but if this is for back pain, the epidural space would be the location of choice.

  • I've had cortisone shots in my shoulder.  Definitely helped with the pain.

I had an epidural injection in my lower back for compressed/degenerative discs that were causing excrutiating sciatic pain.  One epidural has lasted me almost 2 yrs without any pain or flare-ups.

  • I have both great results (no pain for 4 months) and no results (pain back the very next day).  The time where the injection did nothing for me, I ended up with a discectomy and have never felt better.  I have spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and am just prone to slipping discs because of this.

It happened 4 years in a row starting at 25 years old, and the 5th time the disc just wouldn't go back in, so I had the surgery.  It was minor, no fusion or anything like that.  I would definitely recommend the injections and PT first.

  • I had them in my ankle and foot and felt nothing the first few times.  Then the doc must have hit the nerve, which was my problem in the first place and ended up having surgyer on, because then within minutes I had pins and needles in my ankle and foot and couldn't stand or walk.  AND i had to drove home AND it was my right foot.  I literally had to crawl into my house.  I lived home at the time and my dad totally made fun of me because i was laughing and crying at the same time. lol

But in the long run, didnt do much else after a couple weeks but my problem ended up being more than just shots at the time.  still after surgeru my ankle still hurts!

I was asking for both since he is considering doing the epidural for my back and cortisone for hip/knee...I'm a lovely mess :-)

Just curious of any bad side effects.
