Talk to me about Veterinary Pet Insurance Company* (VPI)

My husbands company offers pet insurance through this company. I was wondering if anyone has used them and if they are any good? If not can you recommend a good one?

Re: Talk to me about Veterinary Pet Insurance Company* (VPI)

  • I dont know much about it, but my vet gave me brochures for that company. We just picked up a rescue last week and he came with shelter care insurance for 30 days. I need to do my homework and read up on which is best.

I do know our k9 officer uses VPI for our work dog. He said that he likes that company, but he is a working dog and needs meticulous care.  He said the annual premium was somewhere around 800.00 a year, but the department pays for it. I'm curious to see what others think here as well.

  • I have heard bad things about VPI.

For reviews, I would look at pet insurance reviews and pet insurance university.

You also want to decide what you need in an insurance.  I wanted it for health issues that could be genetic, issues that could happen on both sides of the body, and injury/illness emergencies.  Some companies do not cover congenital conditions but I wanted one that did so I went with Pet Plan but Embrace is another great option.  If you are not concerned about genetic conditions, Pets Best gets great reviews.  It's important to really read the different plans (you can request sample plans) to read what they really cover because there are differences.

  • I also heard they have a tendency to deny claims for technicalities and offer low reimbursement rates.  We use Pets Based based on the positive reviews of a few regulars here but have never had to be reimbursed.

We also just adopted a second and shelter care is blowing up my phone.  I'm skeptical of how complete their coverage is as well.
