Carpet & laminate recs in clear lake area

I think kel recommended ProSource, I am having Jack's Carpet come by this morning for an estimate.  If you've worked with anyone fantastic, I'd love to know.  Thanks!

Re: Carpet & laminate recs in clear lake area

  • Jack's Carpet did our carpet and granite counter tops in our house. They were very easy to work with my husband was ablet to talk them down in price and I like that our carpet is stain proof (which has been tested a number of times).
  • Is ProSource open to the public or limited to businesses?

We're looking into laminate also but will install it ourselves. If we can find something we like in person, we'll probably order from www.efloors.com  My parents ordered from them and were very happy. I've been wanting to go check out Lumber Liquidators just because they seem to sponsor a lot of big events and I'm curious.

Of all places, Sam's had some nice looking laminate the other day but just not sure how I feel about buying my flooring there.

  • we are pretty much not at all interested in doing any install ourselves (i wish, but my busy season is about to kick up and DH's has already begun with cookoff being this weekend)... so i know that will make for extra cost but that's fine.

in talking to the jack's carpet guy, it sounds like the process of having laminate installed is just not somethign i want to deal with right now (the leveling of the floor and the possibility of having a lot of fine dust all over everything in my kitchen, ick, and having to coop up my animals for 3 days)... so we will probably go with the carpet-everywhere option.

I'm not sure what they told you but why on Earth would they be cutting the laminate "in your house."  Yes it creates a mess of dust but really.  If they can't set up outside in the driveway or back yard they are doing something very very wrong.

Not that you want to do the work yourself but I don't think you got a straight story from them.   Did they even tell you how big of a crew they would use to install the laminate in your house?  I'm also not sure that it would take three days if they had an adequate crew.

  • I know zero about laminate but they did our carpet (3 rooms) and countertops in both bathrooms and the kitchen in one day. Everything was cut outside and they were gone before 5 after putting all my bedrooms back together in the layout I wanted.

  • oh, he was saying that the prep of the floor and leveling could create a lot of thick dust... and advised that i put away all of my thing on shelves and take pics off the walls.  i just wonder how un-level the floor would be under my carpet?  i guess it would depend of there was glue or anything underneath.  maybe he was giving me a worst-case scenario.

i am just not keen on dealing with that whole messy process right now if it ends up being what needs to happen.  this would encompass the "open" area of our living room, my office, and the entire kitchen since our house has no walls.

  • We used Jack's for carpet (Bay Area location) and Monster Hardwood Floors for our laminate.  The carpet was done in one day, though they quoted two days for 5 bedrooms, media room, stairs and hallway.  They did work pretty late into the evening in order to finish.

Monster had the best prices, once DH was done beating them up, and a good selection of higher end laminate. The laminate was also done in one day (living, dining, bathroom and hallway).  They had a 4 person crew and worked into the evening.  Our livingroom already had hardwoods, but they removed carpet and tile from the other areas.  They moved the furniture and I just moved stuff on top of tables.  They cut everything outside and cleaned up before they left.  There was a little dust, but nothing crazy. The manager even stopped by to check on the crew.
