Nicholas has a lisp. I've brought it up to the ped at his last 2 visits and both times they weren't concerned and said he'd outgrow it.
DH brought it up again and wonders if we should do something about it. I'm not sure what to do since the ped. seems to think he'll outgrow it. I just worry that if it doesn't go away I'm wasting time not doing something about it, kwim?
Have any of you dealt with this? Would you push the issue?
Re: ? about Lisps.
How old is Nicholas? When he lisps does his tongue come between his teeth or does the air kinda of come out from both sides of his teeth making the slushy sound?
Is he a current thumbsucker?
How old is he?
My mom thought I would grow out of my lisp as well but at 10 years old she realized it wasn't going to happen and I started seeing a speech therapist during recess at school. It may have been once or twice a week and no longer than a school year and she taught me how to say "s" correctly.

Oh 2 1/2 no he would not qualify for therapy and developmentally this sound can come in up til age 8 believe it or not. Some people say age 6, depends on the chart you look at, but it is mostly noted as 8. I have taken some students at age6 or 7, depending on the situation, but at 2 1/2 you just have to wait. It is good you are aware though. I would say by age 6 to 7, you can ask for speech eval at school if it doesnt come in by then!
I would only be more medically concerned if he had issues swallowing, chewing or eating due to his tongue, like a true tongue thrust, otherwise no he is too young for this therapy for the /s/ sound.
If you want a list of norms, go to www.linguisystems.com, click on the 2nd tab Free for You, then click on Free Downloads, THen join linguilist for free. then u can download a PDF of Communication Milestones. It is huge booklet and has the speech sounds and age 90% acquired. It also has other milestones too!
Thank you so much!

i doubt the teacher would say anything if she noticed or not because it is a later developing sound. At his age, it would be hard to work on placement and even the concept of understanding when to put tongue behind teeth etc , because you need a certain amount of phonemic awareness, like /s/ says /sssss/ etc.
No worries. Check the chart, he's got plenty of time!
