What's eating my crocuses?
I planted all these crocus bulbs last fall. They just started coimg up and something is eating them all! I don't know what, I just see the buds one day and the next they are chewed off down to the mulch. I see rabbits and squirrels in our yard. Any idea how to stop them? I'm sad and want too see my flowers!
Re: What's eating my crocuses?
I don't know. There are woods behind our house. Should I put something else out for them to eat?
If you really want your crocuses, yes. Consider providing an alternative.
The amount of natural fodder in wooded (yet developed) areas is fairly small- that's why deer and rabbits are such problems for people who live next to habitats. Your crocuses are tasty and easy to spot from a distance. The lure will be hard to overcome. The fact is that most residential landscapes offer more edible plants than the forest does after humans have encroached to this degree.
All of my spring plants--hyacinths, tulips and daffodils are being eaten by squirrels this year. Our street is lined with 90 year old oaks and his year they didn't produce many acorns. I'm spraying my plants with a capsaicin spray and it seems to be helping.
