Looking at Vintage fine china on Ebay

For the first time I have a formal dining room. No formal dining set as of yet (craigslist here I come) but am looking at china. Any thoughts? I found some Lenox I really like but was worried about it being dishwasher safe. I called Lenox and they said if it was made after 1960 that yes it was...So then I asked the customer service lady how to tell if it were and she said she didnt know and give her a minute to google it???? After a few minutes she got back on the phone and said she had no idea. Which sure doesnt help because the pattern I like was made from 1939-1982. Any thought or ideas? http://www.ebay.com/itm/390393040169?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649     not this set specifically but one like it. I would love to buy new but service for 12 would be very expensive and I do love vintage and antique

Re: Looking at Vintage fine china on Ebay

  • I think your best bet is to ask the seller if they know what year their pieces were manufactured.   I wouldn't tell them why I wanted to know, because someone unscrupulous would lie just to make the sale.

ETA:  We hand wash all of our china and our vintage dishes and glassware.  It's not that big of a deal, even when we have large groups, since it isn't something we do every day.

  • I hand wash my china as I am paranoid about it going in the DW.

  • I typically handwash too, even though mine is new and dishwasher safe.  For how rarely I use it, handwashing isn't a huge deal

  • Mine is also new/not vintage and supposedly dishwasher safe.

  • Doesn't the paint in vintage china before a certiain time period have lead in it? I thought I heard that somewhere - could be total BS but I wasn't sure...

  • Can't speak to the dishwasher issue (I put my vintage set in the dishwasher - if I'm not going to enjoy it why have it?) but my aunt has that pattern and it is really pretty in person.

And as someone looking to buy what are you looking for? I have a vintage Limoges set I bought and am ready to sell now but not sure how to go about it. It's a much bigger set than this (serving pieces etc) so it would be a real witch to ship.

  • It's probably about a service for 12 although I need to count up exactly what's here. Dinner plates, salad, bread plates, cups and sauces 2-3 serving bowls, one covered dish, 2 platters, and a gravy boat. It's Theodors Haviland Limoges bone china - cream colored (similar base color to the Lexox pattern you posted) with a gold motif along the edges which are lightly embossed.

Really pretty set that goes with a lot but my mom died last year so now I have her set too so don't need this one anymore. I looked the pattern # up once (patterns at this time weren't named, but were numbered after the fact)...I can try to find it again or if you want pictures you can send me your email.

  • It's Schleiger 133 by Haviland, and there's soup bowls too - here's some pictures although they aren't the greatest:

  • My china has a platinum band around the outside, so no DW.  It's not that huge of a deal to handwash it.
  • This set has a gold edge but is royal albert and isnt very old..running time was 1980-1997 so should be fine
