Decor over downstairs changing table??

We bought antique dresser that we're going to put a changing pad on for changing diapers downstairs and it is in a vestibule towards our back door.  I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for lightweight / won't-hurt-baby-if-it-falls decor for over the dresser.  We tend to be earthy and classic so although I like the look, fun Japanese laterns or things like that won't really mesh.  (I could do that in the baby's room but this is next to our family room so needs to be more subdued).

Ordinarily, I'd think artwork (but don't want to put glass up) or a mirror or shelving but obviously not ideal over a changing table.

Re: Decor over downstairs changing table??

  • Are you talking about something hanging from the ceiling, or just on the wall?

I think artwork on canvas or wood, or even framed under plexiglass would be fine.  If it really bothers you, though, you could do a wall decal or stencil directly onto the wall.

When kids are real little they don't have much reach, and when they're older they don't flail around as much, so I don't think you're in real danger of things falling on the kid.

  • I opened this thinking you were going to say you didn't want a downstairs changing table because it would disturb your decor!

I would go for a picture. Anything over the changing table becomes something they will want to grab and pull up on and play with, so you want it as boring as possible, so they concentrate on the superfunexciting thing you give them to hold their attention. House tweaking made a pretty stylish looking mobile for their baby. You could do something like that.

  • As long as you hang something properly on the wall, it will be safe.

In our family, we almost always hang a large mirror on the wall above the changing table.  It makes for some fun play after changing  their diaper, and they love looking at whatever is reflected while you are changing them.  We tend to be a pretty vain bunch though, so that might play into it.lol

  • I am just completely paranoid about something falling over on the baby while I am changing them - not so much them grabbing it.  In the nursery I "made" embroidery hoops with diff't types of fabric so they were lightweight.  But the canvas idea might work well as that is really lightweight too - thanks!

We've never had anyone try to pull off anything over the changing table, but we hang things very securely so that it wouldn't come off if they did try.    I guess that is another plus of living in earthquake country...you learn how to make sure that everything will stay put.  Even something lightweight like a canvas is hung so that it won't fall on someone.  The 3m picture hanging things that are like velcro, in addition to other methods of hanging something really helps.

  • We used Liquid Nail for the shelves over our changing table.  They aren't going anywhere for a hundred years.  Might not have been with wisest move but at least they're secure.  Everything I put on them...not so secure.  All the cute stuff is down and it's full of rubber duckies and other safe objects.  A mirror would have been a smart idea.

  • Really, your kids never tried to grab what was on the wall above the changing table!?!

C never pulled it off the wall, but she grabbed for it ALL the time for a period to the point that I took it down and hung a origami crane mobile (from the ceiling) there instead.  Now I tell people not to hang things there, or plan to have to take it down between for a while. I bet I could put it back now, but I have the mobile instead.

  • An heirloom quilt or blanket - buy quilt clips.

    A canvas picture

A string w/ clips where you hang baby's artwork or family pics and change them out.  So when baby is born - handprints and foot prints, then mat on construction paper and viola - art work.

You could also do some shelves to put some decor or baskets w/ need to reach items.

What about some wreaths hung at differing heights?

Or something like letters - I just bought the letters READ for our reading nook at Michaels - they are lightweight and thing and I hung them w/ command velcro things.

    Or something from etsy

    Chalkboard or cork board

Or something unqiue - like a collection of starfish or iron flowers or those flat woven plates made from wood - like this but I know you find them cheaper - http://www.etsy.com/listing/94076719/woven-plate-in-simple-pattern-with, or a ton of those wood frames w/ small mirrors from ikea.
