How much dirt do I actually need?

I want to do a tiny garden this year with just tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. How  deep does the soil need to be for the roots of these things? I'm asking because I may not actually plant them in the ground.

Re: How much dirt do I actually need?

  • From personal experience, I find that tomatoes do better with deeper soil (a pot at least 16 inches wide and 12 inches deep).  Cucumbera andlettuce don't seem to need as much, but the cucumber is going to need a lot of room or a trellis to spread out on.
