Bunion surgery

I have decided to take the plunge and have bunion surgery on both feet (at separate times) later this year because the pain has become too much to deal with on a regular basis. I have been to two podiatrists, had custom orthotics made 2 years ago, steriod shots in my feed, wide shoes, etc. and it's time to take the next step.  I will be having lapidus arthrodesis on both feet and will have screws put in. I was wondering if anyone has had bunion surgery and what your experience was like.

Re: Bunion surgery

  • I have not, but know that my day will come.  I have 2 girlfriends who have had it done--one was 35 and one was around 45.  Both tolerated it very well and say it was well worth the initial pain and limited mobility.  I also know two older women (in their 60s) who had it done and said it was more painful than childbirth.  After having the first foot done, both of those women elected not to even have the 2nd done.

Best of luck!  I'm sure that, since you're active and young, it will be well worth it and that you will have a full and speedy recovery!

  • It was the best thing I ever did!

Yeah, it hurt and sucked being in crutches for a while, but 6 years later I certainly don't regret it.  And I'm training for my 2nd half marathon.

  • I just finished my recovery.  Actually, it was pretty easy.  I had zero post op pain, very little swelling as I spent the first two weeks in bed with my foot elevated at all times (even when asleep).  The doc said I was to be no weight bearing except for going to the bathroom for the first 3-4 days, but I rented crutches and was no weight bearing at all for 2-3 weeks.  I didn't want to mess up that bone healing!

I was in the boot for 6 weeks; doc said everything looked great and I didn't have to wear it anymore.

  • My mom had it done about a year ago,,she's in her early fifties.  She didn't have the screws removed.  She said it hurts still sometimes, but she does Zumba like a maniac, like hours at a time.  I assume if she can do this, the recovery is ok.

She was in a boot for awhile, then only well structured shoes, and now can do whatever she wants pretty much. I don't think she regrets it at all.
