square foot garden - what to do to last year's soil
This will be my third year with a square foot garden. The first year, I made Mel's mix and everything was fantastic. Vegetables grew as well as I could have hoped. Last year, at the beginning of the season, I added as much compost as I could to fill the box back up. That was the only thing I did to the soil. My vegetables did not grow nearly as well as they had the year before.
I'm getting ready to plant again and wondering what I should be doing to my soil. I didn't see anything in the book except for adding compost. Did anyone else experience this or have any thoughts on what I should do? Thanks!
Re: square foot garden - what to do to last year's soil
Do you really have to add something every year? Dunno how old your compost was last year but maybe now this years it's disintegrated enough to not hold up plant growth?
I think ultimately you have to test your soil to see what it's lacking and go from there.
What are you doing during the fall and winter? Did you plant any cover crops or use other nitrogen fixers?
I don't add a thing.
I do, however, surround my plants with mowed grass clippings after mowing. I usually stop after I have a good 2" base. Helps my plants and keeps the weeds away!
I just add compost. I "rotate" my crops and do add blood meal where I plant corn since it sucks nitrogen out of the soil.
you can get some organic fertilizers. I have a bag of organic fertilizer for tomatoes too.
