Re: I want to kick my Diet Coke habit

  • In middle and high school I drank about 4 diet Pepsis a day. It was just.. in the house and easy to grab..

When I got to college I realize how 100% HORRIBLE that crap is for my body and decided.. no more.. The first switch I made: regular.

Gross. going from diet to regular was hard... regular is sooo thick and sweeeet.. I could only sip on it and that one would last me all day.. plus I felt guilty about the added sugar/calories so I didn't WANT  more than that.. THen I realized I just wasn't enjoying it anymore.. and cut soda completely. That switch to regular really help for my mind and I haven't had a soda in about.. 2 years?

Now I can't even have a cocktail that is mixed with soda without getting a splitting headache so I gave up on those two years ago.

A lot of people say to switch to the carbonated water (I have that with gin or vodka as my "tonic") with flavorings like cherries, lemon, lime, etc.. that's a good start if you want to try it that way... but honestly it wasn't until I swapped the diet for the reg can that I completely flipped and hated the stuff.

  • Whatever you do, be sure to get some caffeine replacement or you'll get some killer withdrawl headaches.

  • I don't drink soda but sometimes I do crave one - what I do is drink a La Croix water - it's carbonated and sometimes I think it is the carbonation that I am craving.  It comes in lemon, orange flavors... I say flavors lightly because it's just a tinge of that, and there is no sodium and no sugar, and no fake sugar - it's not sweet at all. It's just carbonated water, but it's in the can, and the carbonation is great.  It's delicious and thirst quenching when it's very cold.  I also drink iced tea with lemon (unsweetened). These two things, and regular water, are basically the only things I drink!
  • Up until about four years ago, my choice of beverages were either coffee, soda or milk.  I never drank water.  Then I started paying attention to what I was eating and putting into my body.  So I slowly started drinking flavored water still with some soda here and there.  Then I eventually got to the point of just drinking water all day and maybe a small glass of soda with my meal at night.  I went through months w/o soda and felt fine.  The key is to just do it in increments and pace yourself so to not go cold turkey.

  • I kicked the diet coke habit cold turkey a couple of years ago. I felt so much better afterward! You might need to have sparkling water if you crave the fizzy part.

  • I went cold turkey off of diet soda for a while on a challenge.

What I found most helpful was to buy fizzy bottled water (plain, no flavour, the flavours were _nasty_ to me).  And I'd pour that over ice and fresh squeezed lime juice.

I went thru a crazy amount of lime juice, but it was much better for me than diet soda, and it was pretty tasty - I found I didn't really miss the soda.  I did go thru a crazy amount of limes, though...

  • I had an amazing Diet Coke habit from 2001-2007. In 2007, suddenly, my body revolted and I developed a reaction to all fake sugar. Headaches galore would start an hour or two after I drank or ate anything "diet".

What worked for me was going cold turkey on the Diet Coke, but keeping up with my coffee (unsweet with milk) in the morning and unsweet green tea with lunch. The coffee and tea helped to keep the withdrawl from being horrible. Even then it was pretty hard for me to kick the 'sweet flavor' addiction but after a few weeks that went as well. I do indulge with a regular coke if I really *need* a soda, but try not to overdue that because of my waistline. Every now and then I get a sip of something diet and can taste all the chemicals. Gross.
