Derby & Cinco de Mayo Party

Hi ladies, I haven't really posted here, but occassionally lurk.  H and I's birthdays are both at the beginning of May, so we're hosting what has turning into a double-themed (double) birthday party; Derby de Mayo.

Our invited suggested derby attire and I have a rough food outline.  The party is starts at 3pm, 30-ish people and we anticipate it lasting through a good portion of the night so I want to make sure there's enough food and drink

Food: chips, queso, salsa, gauc, taco dip and taco bar (ground beef, black beans, olives, onion, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, hard and soft shells)

Dessert: Mint julep cupcakes, derby pie (and maybe cookies/fruit "tacos"); and also a pinata Embarrassed

Drink: Margaritas, mint julep, keg beer and craft beer (and we also have our bar stocked with vodka, rum, etc, and mixers).

How does that sound on food options?  I'm thinking of adding in a derby-themed item, veggies and dip or tortilla rolls too.  And for drinks, this is a group of drinkers; how much tequila would you recommend?  (We have a margarita maker we'll be used for frozen drinks).

TIA

Re: Derby & Cinco de Mayo Party

  • If you are expecting this to run into the night I would try to do some spacing of items.  Start with some Derby style apps, then put out the taco dinner for the rest of the night.  I would add chicken or pork to the beef and add some rice.

I think dessert is fine, but a instead of fruit tacos, maybe go simpler and do a fruit salsa and cinnamon chips.

    Smart idea; thanks!
  • keep the margaritas easy: buy Jose Cuervo pre-mixed margaritas and keep it in the freezer, these get perfectly slushy (just take the inside cap off) and no mixing required!

Definitely space out the apps, main and dessert, with a few things to graze on in between.
