Re: Penn State
Yahoo reported this morning that NCAA announced Penn State's punishment.
The details of the punishment:

Honestly, I think they are going to have a really hard time recruiting anyone for their program and as a parent I wouldn't even let my kid go to that school. No way would I send my money to support them.
I think the football program needs to go away a la Wichita State (sans the horrific plane crash, of course).
I am extremely disappointed in their punishment. The NCAA RUINIED SMU's football program - it has never recovered - over recruiting violations in the late 80s. Granted the recruiting violations were pretty severe but this???? Everytime I saw on ESPN this weekend the little thing at the bottom flash across and say "Penn State is not expected to receive the death penalty" I got sick.
I agree with this. I also think this is sort of like a death penalty without actually being one. I think PSU's football program will suffer greatly because of this. There have been reports of some payers already transferring. Does anyone know if the higher up people (Board of Trustees) that were part of the cover up were also fired? I think if PSU ever wants to regain trust then they need to completely start fresh.
I think this adds up to a "death penalty" for four-to-five years, at which time a zombified Penn State will resume normal activity. I'm sure their reputation will be tarnished, but for how long?
I was thinking about this a lot this morning. The atrocities that went on at Penn State are the worst sort of crime I can imagine occurring on a college campus, within any program. One could argue that something like this is on par with murder. Is the punishment handed down this morning the worst sort of punishment I can imagine? No. Does it fit the crime? In my opinion, hell no.
Proactive, no. Reactive, definitely.
I was shocked to overhear people at work actually think the punishment at Penn State was too severe, or be critical of the punishment in that regard whatsoever. I wonder how people would react had it been their own child that was abused.
A FB friend essentially posted that the NCAA should have stayed out of it and left it as a criminal matter for those charged since their charter is really only to level the playing field in terms of giving one team a competitive advantage over others. I was kind of at a loss for words.
