Buying new couches, please help.

My DH and I are looking to buy new couches. We've bought two sets of couches in the past and both were cloth and lasted approx. 6-7 years each. They faded, the cushions looked horrible, etc. We have a 20m and 2 cats.

So we are debating purchasing a top grain Flexsteel leather reclining set this time. Because people have said leather is better for kids/pets and will stand up longer.

Our debate is a regular fabric set is $2K and the leather recliners are $4K. We are worried are we going to spend $4K on a set that is going to need to be replaced in 6 years same as a $2K fabric set because pretty much all couches have a 6-7 year life?

Thoughts? Experiences? What would you do?

Re: Buying new couches, please help.

  • My friend's family had leather and it lasted quite a while, but once it got one rip/crack/tear it was over.  Seemed like overnight it started tearing everywhere.  I would not get leather couches with cats, but that's me.

We have a set of microfiber couches that I found cheap at an estate sale.  They stand up to EVERYTHING.  I'm totally serious.  Food, drink, the occasional leaky diaper...it seriously all wipes off with a wet wipe.  They've lasted 4 years with us and who knows how old they were before that.

I can't give you a brand name or anything, but when we eventually replace these we're going to get microfiber again.  I'm totally sold.

    Best of luck!

  • I'm going to say that I believe completely the opposite of the pp. I had microfiber that I loved until a husband, dog, and newborn came into the picture. Now, we can't wait to pitch it and move onto leather. We have 2 cats, but they're de-clawed, so I'm really more worried about the dog with the new couch, if anything.
  • Quality furniture should last 30-40-50 years.  In that time, depending on how hard you are on your furniture, you may need the cushions replaced and the fabric reupholstered, but a solid hardwood frame will last.  Furniture, IMO, should never last just 6-7 years.  Disposable furniture is awful for the environment.  I know Flexsteel is a good brand, but how good I don't know, so do your research.  Do some googling on quality furniture manufacturing techniques and try to buy furniture made that way.
  • Have you ever had a leather sofa?  I have and I hated it.  Always cold to the touch, can never get comfortable because your always sliding on it.  I had a cat too and it put a nice scratch in it.

What about a slipcovered set?  Easily washes, can always get new covers.  Scotch guard  works wonders too.

  • What about an outlet? We priced leather couches for DH's man room and we were looking at around $8k.   We have two huge dogs and two scratchy cats - no thank you. Further, leather is HOT and ugly.  Even though I knew it was probably the best choice for our family, ugly ugly ugly.

Anyhoo, an outlet furniture store opened near our house. It sells the last sets or furniture that is slightly damaged. We found a leather Lane couch and sofa set for $1,500. It is beautiful!!!  The original price was $6,000.  The couch had a very small cut on the back in the leather - no one will ever see it and the warranty we purchased will repair it.  We were kind of eh about the warranty at first, but the warranty will cover pet issues and it was only $150 for five years, so I think it will be a good investment for when one of our cats goes bonkers and scratches it up (right now they are being suspiciously good, very odd).

So....my advice is yes, leather. It cleans easily and holds up well.  Find an outlet to buy them at a discount.

  • Hmmm, I can't imagine having to buy a new set every 7 years. I've had my microfiber couch and a cheap leather chair since 2006 and they look great...I don't see replacing them anytime soon.

The couch is from PB (not slipcovered) and the chair is wood and cheap bonded leather from JCP. And I have a 2.5 year old, although no pets.

The microfiber does spot clean well...I've gotten off spit up, ink, and some food. We don't eat a ton on the couch though...and I laid a quilt down on the bottom of the couch for early potty training although thankfully it was never called to duty.
