Mommy & Me Classes - ? for CFL Moms!

Has anyone been to My Gym, Gymboree, or any other Mommy & Me classes? Do you recommend any in the area?

My son isn't in daycare because I work from my home, which is great...but being he is my only child, he doesn't get to interact with other toddlers. I'm leaning toward a Mommy & Me gymnastics class, but I'd love to hear any other recommendations. :)

Re: Mommy & Me Classes - ? for CFL Moms!

  • The gymnastics class sounds like fun. I have a friend that does Gymboree. I went with them once when I was pregnant and I personally didn't think it was worth the money for what it was. I didn't think it was anything that couldn't be done with a few moms in your neighborhood. There was a few songs and the kids played on some equipment (like a mini playground) The one I saw was for 1 1/2 year old kids. My friend is actually cancelling her membership this week.

Where is the gymnastics class? I also heard of some that they have at the YMCA as well. Lily was too young for it so I haven't tried it yet.

  • From what I've seen and heard, I don't think Gymboree is worth the money either. But I was open to hearing good experiences with them. :)

Most gymnastics centers offer Mommy & Me classes starting at 18 months, so your little cutie is a bit too young for them. My son is an active little boy who loves to climb and do somersaults, so I'm thinking he might enjoy a gymnastics class. haha  We have one here in Lake Nona, but I know there's another gym near Metrowest, and a few others scattered throughout the city.

I've never heard of the YMCA classes - I'll have to check those out! I know smaller communities usually have reasonably priced classes through their Parks & Rec department, but I haven't found any in Orlando.

Are you going to do any of the Safe Start swimming classes with your daughter?

  • I didn't realize you were in Lake Nona..so am I. : ) Yeah I joined the Y after Lil was born to do the yoga classes. I read that they had a couple different things. Safe Start was one of them, I do want to do that class with her for sure, my in laws have a pool. Did you do it with your son?
  • Haha, that's funny that you are in Lake Nona too!  We rent a townhouse, so we don't get the free membership to the YMCA like our neighbors do. We thought about getting a family membership, but it was a bit expensive. Although, I have heard that they give discounts to 70% of their members. I'd love to be able to go work out for an hour each day and utilize their free daycare!

I haven't done Safe Start yet, but our doctor highly recommends them. But she also said that the first few classes are very traumatic and hard to watch. I'd love to send my husband to those classes, but they are held for 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. That means I'd have to go, and I don't know if I would be able to watch it! :(

  • Not a mommy but my mommy friends often take advantage of "free" things like story telling at the library

    example here http://www.ocls.info/Programs/storyPrograms.asp?bhcp=1

  •  I haven't done a class yet, but would love too!  I need to start looking into it more.  As far as the swimming classes, I am dreading taking Mia.  I know it is so important, but am so nervous about those first few classes.  We could go together and cry in the background as we watch our little ones cry!!!
  • Haha, I would totally need the emotional support at the Safe Start classes - I'll bring the Kleenez! I'd be the crazy mom who jumped into the water and pulled her baby out. ;)

My pediatrician warned me that I'll see kids screaming, crying and throwing up. :(((((

  • So do you think it's OK if we arrive in our bathing suits since we know we will be jumping in anyway??? Haha!!!!  I use to be a nanny and I have seen first hand the kids at swim lessons.  Today though they are awesome swimmers and don't remember any of it.
  • Haha - good idea! If you decide to sign your daughter up, you'll have to let me know how much they are and how it goes!

That's probably the good thing about doing classes at this age - they won't remember them down the road. It still seems like a throw back to the 1800s when children were thrown in the creek to learn how to swim. Or maybe I'm still emotionally scarred from my kindergarten swimming class when they pushed me in the deep end!  haha

  • Oh gosh, Kindergarten memories are coming back to you now.  How terrible.  I think we might wait until around March to start??  Hopefully other moms on here who have been through this can shed some light for us:)

I do want to start some kind of class though for us really soon.

  • I need to start up with a class soon too. Collin's pretty quiet around new people, so I think the socialization would be good for him. I'm debating between the gymnastics class and Little Gym. If you go to Little Gym's website, you can get a coupon for a free class if you guys want to try it out! And if you live by Lake Mary, I believe there's a My Gym there, which I've also heard good things about.

  • Oh! And if you haven't taken your daughter to places like the Kanga Room, you should definitely check them out. It's so much fun!

  • Thanks for the tip!!  You know, all this stuff goes up around where you are after we move away!  Isn't that how it works.  Hopefully soon we will be back in the Orlando/Winter Haven area and will be a bit closer to these places.  Have you taken your son to Leu Gardens on a Monday for story time?  It's free.  I really want to take Mia one of these days.
  • Aww, did you move out of Orlando? I didn't know that Leu Gardens offered story time. I will definitely check that out! Have you been to story time at the library yet? I think I'm going to check it out tomorrow at the downtown library. I'm not sure if Collin will want to sit on my lap the whole time though. lol

  • I posted earlier and I don't see it....weird.

I live in a townhome as well, we don't live in the northlake neighborhood but I teach at the elementary school around here so I get a free membership to the Y. I can get a family membership but I have to pay extra. I checked out the daycare in there and I don't feel comfortable leaving her in there when she is this young.  So I'll probably do the family membership later. I will probably do the safe start next summer. If you are thinking of doing it then we should do it together.

Ohhh kanga room looks like SOOO much fun,I want to jump around in there! lol

  • I take my son to Kindermusik classes

There is also this place in St. Cloud http://www.partytimeplayhouse.com/

  • Oh, I'm so jealous of your free membership at the Y! I was just looking at their website, and they offer a free mommy & me class once a week at the Lake Nona location. You should check it out.

If I haven't had the guts to do Safe Start before next summer, then we should definitely do it together!

Kanga Room is as much fun inside as it looks from the outside! I love it there! lol

  • They do kanga room nights at our school for the kids. I think the school gets a percentage of what they make that night, but I always think hmm....maybe teachers can go bounce around too! lol : ) When Lil is older we will DEFINITELY be going there! Lil was a little young for the Mommy and Me class at the Y unless they do something different from the handout they gave me. I

f you join the Y let me know, I could use a workout buddy. That's the only way I can get the motivation to go and my friend that was going to Yoga with me is pregnant and it is getting uncomfortable for her now so she is not going anymore...

  • I'm sure a teacher could get away with bouncing around at the Kanga Room during a school event. ;) The bounce house is a great workout! lol

I'll definitely let you know if I end up joining the Y - especially when it comes with the added benefit of a workout buddy! :)

  • We did Gymboree for a few months last summer, but Michael didn't get the interaction that I had hoped. We also did swim lessons last summer, but we did the ones that you are in the water with them.  He loved it!  We missed out this summer because of the baby!!  I couldn't be in the water with both at the same time! Next summer though for sure!!  I would definitely give library time a shot.
  • Non-Mom butting in here...

a friend of mine is part of a ctr fl playgroup, i think she found them on meetup.com (there are tons of playgroups/mommy and me groups on there - just put i your zip code and then click on "parenting and family" to find them).

also, a friend of mine is involved with stroller strides, which is a neat way to meet other ctr fl moms, have your kids interact, and get fit at the same time.... (google stroller strides)....

    hope this helps!

  • I don't have any info on Mommy and Me classes but I live in the Lake Nona Area too, I live in Nona Crest and I also belong to the Y over there. I go to the yoga class at night once in a while. If you ladies want to meet up let me know, I could use the motivation!! Plus I don't know many people in the area.

The Kanga room also looks like a lot of fun, what age can they start going there. Nate is 9 1/2 months, is that too young?

  • My husband is a SAHD and he takes Delaney to the story time at the downtown library and the one at the Winter Park library.  He likes the Winter Park one much better.

He also does the Mommy, Daddy and me time at the downtown Y.  It is a bit expensive for the family membership, but he goes almost every day.

We've been wanting to check out the Gymboree classes - we've gotten things in the mail to try a free one.  Kindermusik also offers a free trial class.

Pottery Barn kids does story time, I think on Tuesdays at 10:00.  He's also taken her to Monkey Joe's.

    Good luck!

  • I'm coming in REALLY late, but maybe you'll check it ;) ?I live in lake nona area too. ?I have an almost 2 year old. ?We did Kindermusik in Vista Lakes which was fine, but not enough play time for my son. ?We did Kangaroom classes which was play time and then bounce time. ?No real structure, but fun nonetheless....yes adults bounce ;) ?There is a Lake Nona Mom's Group which has scheduled activities weekly. ?I hear the Y is great, but I too don't have a membership. ?We usually go to the library on Wednesdays for storytime. ?The park is good and shaded off Vista Lakes and Econ Trail too. Oh and last summer we did swim lessons at the St.Cloud aquatic center...$25 for 2 weeks, it's everyday for 30 mins and it's mommy and me. ?I wouldn't say he knows how to save himself, but he understands kicking and paddling and isn't scared of the water. ?Whew that's a lot of info;)
