Anemic

Hi ladies,

so I received a letter from my doctor stating that my red cell blood levels were low and I need to start taking an iron pill daily. It freaked me out because I've never had anemia before. It does explain why I've been tired. Any suggestion besides the iron pills? I'm planning to incorporate more spinach. Thanks!

Re: Anemic

  • Did they say anything about taking something for constipation? Iron can back you up pretty badly sometimes. :-)
  • If you are going to be taking an iron supplement be sure to invest in some prune juice and/or stool softeners! I hope the anemia is easily resolved :)

Drink even more water than you have been. As pp stated it can constipate you.  Also if you take it with citrus juice it helps absorption, but don't take it with calcium because that can block absorption.

  • Thanks ladies. Yes she suggested more fluid intake and probably Colace. I actually started eating prunes today and will do that daily. Hope it helps! Thanks for the suggestions!

Anemia is really common in pregnancy, so no worries there. I definitely agree with the stool softeners. Red meat can help too, if you eat it.

This. Vitamin c increases absorption so vit c rich foods/juice without added calcium or just a vit c tablet.

So I can take the Vitamin C tablet at the same time as the iron pill?

Yep! As long as it is just plain vitamin c. (i.e. not a combo with other vitamins or minerals)
