Does your family dress up for the holidays?

DH told me last night that I need to dress up for Christmas with his dad's family. They don't go all out with suits and ties, but he called it "Sunday casual", with sweaters, button down shirts, khakis or nicely pressed jeans.  I now have no clue what to wear.  I'm used to jeans and long sleeve shirt if it's cold, but nothing dressy at all.

Re: Does your family dress up for the holidays?

  • We don't come to dinner in pj's or sweats, but we don't really "dress up" either. Nice jeans with a pretty top would be just fine at our house. We are not formal people. Our family celebrations are mostly casual, laid back and stress free. I think that if I were going somewhere new for a holiday I'd play it safe with something more like Sunday attire and leave the jeans at home. Something like dark slacks and a sweater would work and still be comfortable.
  • I usually wear a good pair of jeans...dark, not worn out...a nice top...last year I wore a long black sweater and a wide belt around my waist...and nice shoes...last year, I wore red heels. By the end of the day though I was in black flats.
  • I usually wear jeans and a nice top to everything. I refuse to wear a dress lol because most places we go I am in the floor playing with kids. Both sides of our families have never really done the dress up thing.

  • I usually wear a nice sweater/jeans or dress pants for Christmas with the extended family...but with close family, I wear something more casual.
  • My family usually dresses up a little bit. I usually wear some dress pants.. black pants or dark cordoroys and a nice sweater. My mom and grandma sometimes wear skirts.

DH's family doesn't dress up as much, but I still like to look nice for the photos. :)

  • We are a pretty casual family.  We usually stay in our pjs until noon on Christmas Day and then go to my grandmothers in jeans and a sweater.  I think it may be fun to dress up, but like you we are usually on the floor for lack of seating or playing with little kids.
  • I normally wear something nice to family events... but honestly my mom and I are usually more dressed up than everyone else.  People show up in everything from nice pants and sweaters to jeans (dressy and non-dressy).

BUT... this past weekend when I hosted Thanksgiving at my house, I wore a velour tracksuit all day.  LOL.  Hey, I cooked everything.  I was exempt from the dressing up rule!

  • We only dress up for church on Christmas eve.

Both my family and my FI's family are very casual.  On the actual holidays, I'll generally wear jeans and a nice sweater (well, maybe not a sweater this year in N. Alabama - it's a little too warm for that!)

  • My family is very casual. It's usually jeans and a sweater for most everybody. I usually try to wear something semi-nice so the family that only sees me once a year won't think I am a total skank, LOL.
