Preggers/Moms~! Question...

What is the difference between contractions and cramps?

Every night, I get like cramps, where it feels tight and hurts a little, for like 20-30 seconds then stops. It usually stays away for a while, but I get it again.

Laying down and water makes it stop, but you can't do that all day (well... normally)

Sometimes I get it in my back too, and the fact that I'm a high risk and can go into early labor, I'm going to ask the NP tomorrow.

But is it "cramps" or BH contractions, or something to worry about?

TIA!!!

Re: Preggers/Moms~! Question...

  • Sounds like Braxton-hicks to me.   Are you getting enough rest, enough water?  I sometimes get them if I'm dehydrated or if I've had a very active day.  I feel them very low in my abdomen and sometimes across my back, just like period cramps.  Real contractions shouldn't go away when you lay down, so if rest is helping you, you should be fine.

Ask your NP for sure, just to be safe.

  • I had cramps around the same time through about week 20 also. MIL is a PA and she told me it was my uterus growing. When I mentioned it to my OB she said it was "normal." Since you are high risk, just mention it to your OB anyway.
  • Sounds like Braxton Hicks. But definitely talk to your doctor. :)
  • Possibly Braxton Hicks.  As a high risk pregnancy it's well worth mentioning it to the OB that way they are informed.

  • THANKS!!!

I figured it was just BH, but I will ask her anyway!

When I drink water and lay down they go away, I'm worried that they will put me on bedrest because I get them everyday, and I'm not that active : (
