If you love your town...

tell me about it, please!  Right now we live in Central NJ in Old Bridge.  For awhile now we've been considering moving further south but I know nothing about S. Jersey except for the beaches we visit in the summer.  We have 14 month old twins so we would of course want decent schools and I would love to be no further than 45 minutes from a beach, but if the place is THAT great I suppose I could get over that!

Other things we are looking for is proximity to shopping and restaurants.  While I'd love the privacy of a rural area, I'm used to things being close and with 2 kids I'm not sure I could do without that.

Thanks so much in advance if you can give me some ideas of where to even start!

Christa

Re: If you love your town...

  • I really like my area - I live in Swedesboro/Woolwich, and grew up in Mullica Hill. We're probably about an hour from the shore, and there are shopping centers nearby. It's still kind of rural, but they're really building up the area and I don't have to go far for groceries, restaurants, etc. The only thing we don't have very close is Target, but they're supposed to be building one. We're also getting a movie theatre and a couple other shopping centers in the next couple yrs.

We are pretty south - Exit 2 on the turnpike. I like it b/c we're not as congested as the Cherry Hill area. But that's just my opinion! Good luck in your search!

  • I love Haddonfield and Moorestown. They both have a quintessential small town feel but are in super close proximity to the bigger townships.  I also love Marlton and Mount Laurel because they are the bigger townships albeit they are congested.  They have great shopping centers and dining as well as a hop, skip and jump to the city as well as about an hour to the shore!!
  • I LOVED living in Voorhees. It was close to everything. I could walk to most of my stores (but I like to walk). I moved out to Gloucester county now and I'm still getting used to driving 1/2 hr to get to the supermarket, although living in the country is a nice change.  I am probably like 45 minutes to AC.
  • Ooo...I love Haddonfield, too. I just can't afford to live there! Smile
  • I love my town, I live in Medford.  The schools are excellent and while it has the small, rural vibe to it I am only 5-10 from a lot of shopping and 15-20 minutes from the cherry hill mall.  I am also only about an hour from the shore. :)
  • First of all..

    1. We have the same name..and spelled the same, too!

    2. I have twins, too!!

    Pretty cool, huh?!

Anyways..I live in Buena..it's a small farming town that isn't really "built up", but I'm close to Vineland and Mayslanding. I'm in walking distance to my post office, bank, wawa, dry cleaners, town park.. The school district is also very good.

    good luck!

  • ohh..and i'm about halfway between philadelphia and atlantic city. So about 40 minutes or so from the shore

  • I live in Barnegat and I really do like it.  We are exit 67 off the Parkway and only 5-10 minutes from LBI.  Barnegat and the surrounding towns are starting to grow so there is plenty of shopping within 10-15 minutes away (actually it will only be 5 minutes once there is a entrance south on the Parkway from Barnegat).  If you want a shopping mall, that's a different story...We are 25 minutes from the Shore Mall and 35 minutes to the Hamilton Mall.

The eating is a different story...You do have to drive about 20 minutes for a restaurant that isn't Friday's or Applebee's, but you also have restaurants on LBI when then are open which is great.

The school system is pretty good...Barnegat just got their own HS in the last 4 years.  Its a nice place to live.

  • I live in Mt. Laurel and love it.  The school district is great and it's pretty much close to everything. We're 25 minutes from Philly, about an hour from LBI, and the Moorestown and Cherry Hill Malls are right down the road.  The taxes are also decent compared to Moorestown, Marlton and most Camden County towns.  It's in Burlington County so insurance rates are a little lower too.

I used to live in Tabernacle, which is about 30-35 minutes from LBI and it's right next to Medford.  The school district is great, but you're about 30 minutes from any malls/movie theaters.  The town is pretty spread out and rural.

  • I live in Westampton. It's in Burlington County and significantly smaller than near by Mount Laurel (which is great). The taxes are just about the lowest I have heard of in this area. We are exit 5 off the NJ Turnpike and exit 45 off Rt. 295. There are grocery and other major stores 5 minutes away. The Moorestown Mall and surrounding shoping areas are about 15 down Rt. 295. The schools are more diverse than areas such as Moorestown. Speaking from a teacher's stand point they are always alfuent with the best teaching practices and receive postive ratings for student progress. There is a local K-8 district and a regional high school (that is only 5 minutes away). Currenlty we have almost 100 children in each grade level, with five classes of each equaling under 20 children per class.

There are mostly single family developments here, two townhouse developements, one condo development, and a few larger properties. The majority of the developments are roughly 25 years old, but at least three are new or almost brand new.

Oh, and we're about an hour from the shore and less than 30 minutes to Philly.

  • I live in Blackwood and have nothing really helpful to say about it... just wanted to say your babies have AWESOME smiles!  Too stinkin' cute!  Big Smile
  • Thank you so much for your replies so far ladies!  I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.  I figure I can read about places all I want but the true test is talking to people who live there.

cms0701- that IS cool..lol.  Not many people spell our name with a Ch...there aren't even that many of us in general..nevermind those with twins.  Yours are adorable btw:)

NYGirlie-Not sure if you'll revisit this thread, but thanks for the compliment!  :)

  • Hi There- I actually grew up in Old Bridge! We just moved to PA, but we lived in Marlton for the past several years and loved it! The schools, shopping, restaurants are great, taxes........not so much. They are not cheap, but if you have an older home it may not be terrible. Basically, any of the 4 "M" towns I think are great. Marlton, Moorestown, Mt. Laurel and Medford. These are all right next to each other, so you can take a drive down and preview them all. Also I love Haddonfield too:) GL!
