Can you choose to go on STD?

just a random question again!

going over my mat. leave package HR just sent and it says you can go on STD for as long as the doc "disables you" (lol) and then after that you can use other types of time off. But typically they give you 6 weeks off and I was hoping to use 8 weeks of STD. I thought you could typically opt for STD if you still had some in the bank but I get the point of having to stay home versus wanting to. Any thoughts?

Re: Can you choose to go on STD?

  • A typical vaginal delivery will "disable" you for 6 weeks.  A c-section will "disable" you for 8.  You can only take as much STD as your OB will sign off for - unless you're high-risk and a likely section, typically they sign off for 6 weeks.
  • I'm sorry, but I totally read that as sexually transmitted disease. No one else should ever use the acronym STD -- not the makers of save the dates and not hr representatives.
  • Also, be aware that a lot of STD policies have a 'drop dead' period. Mine was one week. So I was 'disabled' for 6 weeks, but that first week they wouldn't pay anything - I had to use vacation and sick time. So I actually only got 5 weeks of paid STD.

  • lol brooke!

ok - it sounds pretty standard practice. I think I can work around it and still get the 12 weeks I want.  thank god for a lot of vaca time!

  • What is STD?  Is it a common acronym for whatever it is that you're talking about?

  • I first read STD - and said Save the Date? Sexual Transmitted Disease? So now there is a third meaning - Short-Term Disability!

    LOL

a long while ago I joked about learning what the next "std" would be that I would learn about.  it's kinda funny how they progress from single chick, getting married chick, knocked up chick.  I'm sure there is some hormone replacement therapy for menopause called std.
