Re: **CutesBoots**

  • *Butting in*  Yay for puppies!  Post some pics when you have a chance :)
  • Thank you!  We're so excited.  After all of our shiba research, we're getting a standard poodle, but we are still planning to rescue a shiba inu in the future.  Some of the characteristics that are important to us do overlap between the breeds, although the poodle will be much more grooming.

I promise to post pictures ;)

  • Oh congrats, I love standard poodles.  I wouldn't want to show one for the grooming, but I absolutely love their temperament.  Good luck!

  • We're not planning to show her.  I love going to shows, but we're not really at a point where we'd want to do it ourselves. Instead, we are looking into doing dogsports - like Setsail from the Pets board (her dogs are Jackson & Poe).  We've gone to a couple of her competitions they are so much fun.

I hope that I'll be able to learn to do some of the clipping on my own.  I manage to do a decent enough job with the trimmers on Cutesguy's hair.  My aunt who used to groom dogs professionally, so she can give me some pointers.

  • Sports are awesome.  I love going to competitions and hope to get involved with them too.  Probably more agility, rally, and obedience as opposed to disc work, but they are all great and fun to do as a family  I didn't think you were planning on showing, I just meant in general I don't think I would be skilled for that.

Good luck with your new puppy!  So exciting!

    * BIP * Yayyyyy for poodles!!!  I've grown up with them and I will ALWAYS have a poodle of some size.  They are fantastic dogs - highly intelligent, loyal, friendly, and looooove kids.  They are such "people dogs"!  Once you have one, I swear you don't go back. :)  Even DH - who made fun of me endlessly for owning poodles when we first started dating way back when - is so infatuated with this breed now and absolutely dotes on our mini.  When we were looking at rescues and things last year, I kept offering the option of a boxer (what he'd originally wanted), but he was the one to push the point that he preferred a poodle mix of some kind (we ended up with a golden retriever/standard poodle mix).

Their hair intimidates a lot of would-be owners, but honestly, there's cuts that can easily manage it (and they look adorable WITHOUT the awful poufs everywhere!).  I have pics of our standards and mini if you'd like to see some of the cuts they've had!  Once you get the hang of trimming them, it's easy to keep up, although we DO still send ours to the groomer's once every 8 weeks or so.

Poodles love water and thrive on activity - sports sounds like a perfect outlet for them.  Our mini is the fastest little bugger around, and loves nothing more than being active and running endlessly.  Channeling that energy in the way you're planning sounds like a great option. :)

GL and enjoy your new "baby"!  Make sure to share pictures when you have the chance!
