Anyone ever had a good time at a child's birthday party?

I'm planning DD's first birthday party and trying to come up with ideas that will make it fun for adults. There will probably be about 3 other kids there and the rest are just close friends of ours.  We're going to do 2-3 hours max, trying to keep it "short and sweet" (that's the theme also).

Thoughts? TIA.Smile

  • The best child's birthday party I went to was at a bowling alley. The kids hada  lane with bumpers and we had a regular lane. It would depend on how old the other kids are.

  • Ditto the bowling alley thing. Alcohol availability helped... not that I think people should get trashed at a kid's birthday party, but I generally think people have a better time at places where they don't want to be if they can drink.

    Yup.

And this is not exactly the same, but an idea - I went to a co-ed baby shower once and they had a tailgate them.  They just put the football game on and made burgers and wings.  That was the most fun baby shower I've ever been to, and I don't even like football.

  • Bowling parties are good but not for first birthdays.

First birthday parties are more for the adults so I would do a BBQ. Make the menu for the adults and just do whatever you would do when you hang out with your friends.  Depending on the age of the other kids you could do a few things for them like pin the tail on the donkey or a pinata (adults like these too!) but if the kids are as young as your daughter just a bunch of toys for them to play with will be fine.

  • I had the girls first birthday at a restaurant.  It was a charming, local restaurant and we had about 30 people.  Mostly adults but there were a decent number of children.

    Actually, it was here

We had a brunch and everyone loved it.

  • Great ideas, everyone! Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.

That's exactly what we did for Ben's first b-day.  It was in August, so we had it at a park next to the playground.  We brought balls, frisbees, a kite, chalk, waterguns - that kind of thing.  We had beer for the grownups and punch for the kiddos.

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • I wouldn't invite anyone who isn't going to be happy just watching your kid play with his cake, etc.  You don't have to worry about entertaining them, they'll just be excited to be there for the big day.  If they aren't, you are inviting too many people or the wrong people.

This is my motto as well.?

  • just have alcohol so people can deal with the overload of cuteness :). The bowling alley is a good idea too.
