Poll - Did your mom work?

Did your mom work while you were growing up?

Did either of your grandmothers have a job?

If/when you have children do you feel like you have to work?

To me the economy is a big scary monster I am trying to understand.  I was reading an article about the economy today and it was discussing how our median incomes in the US are not growing and that as a result since the 1970's more women entered the work force to make ends meet. This also lead to people using home equity loans to help make ends meet and now spending is stalling (as evident by things like Bon-Ton sales).

Re: Poll - Did your mom work?

  • My mom went back to work when I was 10 and my dad lost his job.

Both my grandmothers worked, one in the HS cafeteria and one as a cleaning lady.  I don't think either of them worked until all their kids were teenagers.

Yeah, I have no choice but to work.  I can't believe the cost of daycare though, I have no idea how people do it with more than 1 child and work full-time.  I think we make good money and have average debt but all these baby costs are scary!!

  • My mom didn't start working until I was in 10th grade.

Both of my grandmothers worked.  One as a teacher's aide and one at the Bell telephone for 30+ years!!

Yes I will work -- But as a teacher, I have all the holidays and summers off!!

  • Hello bad English.  I need to edit my question phrasing.

My mom worked part time when I was in school. I *think* she did not work while we were younger.

My father's mother did not work, my mom's mother worked in the school cafeteria before she retired.  The only other job I knew she had was during WWII.

I feel like if we adopt I would have to keep working to keep our lifestyle (and not that is that fabulous).

  • My Mom did not work a regular job growing up.  She did however provide in home day care to children of family friends that provided income 'under the table'.  It also provided playmates for my brothers and I.

Both of my Grandmothers did work (one worked at Hills and one worked as a waitress and construction! lol).  My parents come from families of 6 and 8 so it was usually the eldest children's responsibility to watch the younger children while the parents were at work (both worked after school hours).

As much as it pains me to do so yes I will work once I have children.  I hate the thought of it and would much rather stay home but thats just not a possibility.  We need both of our incomes for financial stability.  I wish I could come up with a job that would allow me to work from home and be with my children.

  • I don't remember my mom working until I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, but ince then has always worked.  Sometimes more than 1 job depending on our circumstances at the time.

My grandmother on my dad's side did work, my grandmother on my mom's side (who I never met because she died when my mom was 16) was a Navy wife and didn't work.

IF we had a child/children I'd like to stay home at least for the first year or two (or ideally until he/she goes to pre-school), but it would totally depend on our situation at the time.  Daycare costs are insane and sometimes it makes more sense for someone to SAH.

  • My mom didn't work until I started school, so she was a SAHM for at least 5 years or so.  She was also a teacher, so she was always home by 3 or 4, too.

My mom's mom didn't work.  She had 10 kids to take care of.  My dad's mom worked though - she was a nurse and later a psychologist, I think (and dabbled in real estate).  I always think that my grandma was ahead of her time.

I think I have a pretty ideal situation right now....working part-time from home.  It does stink that it still requires me to send my kids to daycare part-time, but I tell myself that it's good for them and they get the best of both worlds.

  • My mom started working PT (just few mornings a week) when I was about 10.  So she was always home when I was home.

My grandmothers...they did work before kids, but I don't think afterwards. They were older grandmothers...my dad's siblings are 10-13 yrs older than him and my mom's mom had her when she was in her late 30's.  So I never saw them work.

Unfortunately I do work and have to work full time.  Luckily I was able to take 7 months off and work the same # days of a teacher (just a different calendar).  I wish I could work PT...I love spending time with Addy, but it's also nice having some time just to be Dawn.

  • my mom didn't work until i went to kindergarten.  then she went to work for my dad as his secretary!

my grandmom, (mom's mother) never worked.  after raising her two children she started volunteering.  everyday she was at the senior center volunteering....even when she was a senior!

my mom-mom (dad's mother) never worked either.  she raised her 4 children and she was an artist.  she spent most of her days taking art classes, painting, sculpting, etc.  i am very grateful to have had such an artistic grandmother.  i have her work all over my home.

on a side note ---- i miss my mom-mom and grandmom so much. Sad

as far as when we have children, the plan is for me to stay home for at least the first year and then go back to work part time.  i want to be home when our kids are home from school because i sure as hell know what can go on between the end of the school day and the time my parents got home! Stick out tongue haha.
