I forgot to mention the outcome of my car because quite frankly I'm just not worrying about it.
Re cap:
Mechanic #1: Does a $600 tune-up, says it may be timing belt. I get a bad feeling, pull it from the shop.
Mechanic #2: Looks at timing belt. It's fine. Doesn't know what's wrong. $85.
Mechanic #3: Can't get the bolt out that Mechanic #2 stripped, doesn't do a thing. But the battery is going. Go to Pep Boys get battery. $100.
Mechanic #4: Takes one look at the car, says he's not working on it. FREE. Tow to next shop: $50.
Mechanic #5: Put it on the lift, 5 minutes later, "There's your problem."
Nutshell Summary: It needs a new engine.
One bolt was totally gone, and on another bolt the bracket was gone and it was loose. No big whoop. They only held the engine together. It made the entire engine shake itself to death while it ran and ruined the entire thing. The crank shaft is completely out of synch. Oil is leaking into places it shouldn't. Ya know, little stuff.
Turns out it's hard to get an engine for this car because there is a huge off-roading society who uses these cars and they hoard the parts. Who woulda thunk? Ain't that sumpthin.
So in the meantime I'm using my dad's car to get to work and we switch off when needed and DH and I shuffle with the one car.
Maybe I'll get a new engine. Maybe I'll get a new car. I don't know. I'm not sweating it. DH and I will make the call when the tax return comes in. It's a car. They're dumb. It happens.
Re: New engine for car! Giddy up!
hmmm...DH and I are into cars, but I never heard about them been known for off-roading. Jeep Wrangler's maybe, but not the Trackers...
I'd say, cut your losses, and get a new car. We just replaced DH's car today (he totaled his 2 weeks ago) and we got a good deal, since the dealerships are hurting for business. Good luck!
It's more the size/type of engine I need that's been hard to find. From driving my Tracker I wouldn't want to try to climb rocks or skid around off road. It's pretty top heavy.
If it's cheap I'll probably put a new engine and knock around a bit longer because I do like the car. Who knows. I'm just going to see how it pans out, and what is the best value for the aggrevation.
