Homeowners insurance?

Who does everyone use and do you know your premium?    When I was looking into refinancing one of the mortgage broakers told me that we pay a lot of our premium and we could fine it cheaper.  We have preffered mutal right now and pay $722 a year......I'm a little confused b/c I know  they need to know the cost of rebuilding your home to come up with your premium and mine is currently at 209,000...we bought the house for 205,000 two years ago....I've read that most of the times the cost to replace is cheaper then the value of the home b/c you don't include the land....but also that sometimes some mortgages companies require you to cover the cost of your mortgage.

Anyone know anything about this?  I've been googling it and can't find anything that answers my questions and now i'm just curious as to if we are getting wripped off

Re: Homeowners insurance?

  • I don't know what we pay, but if you think you are paying to much why don't you call some other insurence companies and get quotes.

What each of us pay won't really help since we are all in different situations.  When we were shopping for home owners insurence we just called a bunch of companies and got quotes from each, and then went with the cheapest.

  • what other companies are good?  I know State Farm is but what others before I start calling around
  • Allstate, Liberty Mutual, Geico, Progressive, State Farm
  • I can't remember the name of the company we use (it was recommended by our builder) but we pay $511.00/year for a 2000 sq ft townhouse. I would just call around to the companies that Lilylow listed and also ask on the buying a home board on the nest.
  • We have Balboa and our premium is $451/year.
  • My house is insured for about the same amount as yours.  We are with Traveler's insurance now.  It's $600 a year.

We switched from another company this past November because our premium went from about $589 to $700 for no real reason.  Pretty much the company was raising their rates and we were hit with the bulk of the increase.  I would definitely call around.

  • Thanks girls!!  We have allstate but they put us with preffered mutal b/c they  no longer take new policies....our rate has gone from 568 to 722 in two yrs.

I just called progressive and got quoted 621 so I'm gonna call the other companies listed...thanks!!

  • We have State Farm and we pay about $200 something/year for about a 1k sq ft condo.  They gave me the lowest quote when I called around and I can walk to their office.  We also use them to insure our rings and I'm looking into switching my car insurance too.
  • As Izzy eluded to, I think it helps to have multiple coverages by the same Insurance company - house, car, etc. This usually helps with discounts!
  • I've called Travelers, Progressive, State Farm and High Point....So far progressive is the cheapest and then High point.   This is exhausting :)
  • I went through a broker....he did all the leg work, compared quotes, and gave me the cheapest.  It saved alot of time and it really didn't increase the price of my quote.  I used Amber Insurance on the White Horse Pike.

  • Who do you have your car insurance with?  I have 2 cars and our home insured through the same company and get like a 20% discount for it.

  • We have both through the same company...well actually the car insurance is through All State and the home is through preferred mutal, but we were put with Preferred mutal b/c Allstate doesn't take new policies anymore.

I called state farm to get a quote from them so we'll see what they come back with......I'm also trying to ideas of what are car insurance will be once we are married...I'm on my mom's at $99 and my FI is with All state and pays $115 a month
