Girls who took Loestrin 24 and had problems.....

what BCP did you switch to?  I've been having breakthrough bleeding with Loestrin and it's making me mad!  I feel better emotionally on this pill and don't want to quit taking it, but I don't want two "periods" a month either!

Re: Girls who took Loestrin 24 and had problems.....

  • This is terrible, but I honestly can't remember what it's called. It's a generic so the name never sticks in my head.  I'm pretty sure it's one of the generic versions of Ortho-Novum 7/7/7.  Ortho-Novum 7/7/7 was the first pill I was on and when I started having problems with the Loestrin after switching, I asked them to switch me back.  I never had any problems with the Ortho-Novum or the generic Ortho-Novum.  I tried the generic Loestrin for awhile, but I had the same side effects as with actual Loestrin.

ETA- In case it matters, breakthrough bleeding was not one of the side effects that I experienced on Loestrin.  I do remember being warned that since Loestrin is a low estrogen pill, there may be a greater chance of breakthrough bleeding than with some higher estrogen options.

  • After Loestrin, I had switched to Yaz and was on that for about two years before going off last February. I was really happy with that and didn't have any problems.

How long have you been on Loestrin? I forget from your post a few weeks ago. If it hasn't been too long yet, maybe the breakthrough bleeding is due to switching, which could be your body still adjusting.?

  • I'm on month three now.  I wasn't on any BCP since like April of 2005.  I'll try one more month and see what happens.  Is Yaz the one you only get a few periods a year?

I haven't taken Loestrin, but I have taken Yaz - and it is not the kind that leaves you with only a few periods a year, although basically any of them can be stacked and taken in such a way as to give you only a few breaks a year even if they are not specifically designed that way (for example, Seasonique is one that is designed for that purpose).  Yaz is the one that really became well-known a year or two ago with its commercials purporting how great it was for women with PMDD.  Personally, I was on it for a year and wasn't thrilled with it - I gained about 10 lbs, which I had never had issues with before (I was on Mircette and had to switch after the estrogen dose became too low after an extended illness and a lot of breakthrough bleeding occurred, which then led me to Desogen, which I was never happy with for a variety of reasons, and then to Yaz).  I'm currently on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo and while I have no complaints to speak of, it's also not as great as Mircette was for me for years.  Eh well.

The breakthrough bleeding, once you're past the initial three months, is the result of too low estrogen dosage in the BCP.  If you're continuing to deal with it, then it's time to look for a BCP with a slightly higher dose.

GL - it's never fun to deal with!  Hope you can get something figured out that works for your body!
