I'm going to 'Frisco!!

I"m so excited to have something to look forward to. My youngest step sister (we never call ourselves "Step"...we are sisters in our book) is turning thirty in May, and her best friend out there FaceBooked me that she wants to throw a surprise party for her, and make it a double surprise by having me come out! My other sister is already planning on going, which my youngest sister knows about...but she has no clue about me.

Originally, I wasn't going to go; I felt like I couldn't afford it, but today I found AN AWESOME DEAL on airfare and hotel today on Expedia.com, so I just had to jump on it. So I'm going! I will only be out there Friday to Tuesday, but that will give me two hole days (Sunday and Monday) to go sight seeing. I know I already want to see Alcatraz, and Kristy (baby sis) lives near Fisherman's Wharf, so I"m sure I will get that in to.

Does anyone have any suggestions if you've been out there before?

  • Very cool!  I've never been there but I have a client who's son lives there now and he loves it.  When I see her this week I'll ask her what her "must see" things are since they been out quite a bunch to visit the son.
  • That sounds awesome...I love surprises like that.

Never been to SF before but one highlight for some is to drive down Lombard Street.  It is the street that has about 8 turns in it and it is a hill.  People go just to drive down it and take pictures of the cars coming down...pretty wild.

  • Jen...make sure you answer me on here and not on FaceBook...I don't want her to see it and get suspicious. Of course you can always use the message feature, now that I think about it. Anyway...any suggestions are appreciated!!!

  • Have breakfast at Dottie's True Blue Cafe. Get there before it opens or you will have to wait a long time.  It is worth it though. It is on 522 Jones St.  It isn't terribly far from Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf. It's an easy trolley ride.

Jason and I also walked across the Golden Gate Bridge which was pretty neat. One thing we didn't get to was Ghiradelli Square.

    Have fun!

ETA, Dottie's is not in a nice neighborhood. We encountered a prostitute complaining to her pimp about her latest john on the way.  Again, it is worth it though. We also walked everywhere, so if you have a car it probably won't be that bad.

  • I was there in summer of 2007 for a few days. I am trying to remember everything we did. We of course went to fisherman?s wharf which wasn?t anything big.  I had some subpar clam chowder in a delicious sourdough bread bowl, make sure you eat some sourdough bread while you are there. I LOVED-LOVED the sea lions at pier 39 and spent a lot of time watching them. We went to an all natural and organic farmer?s market type sale one day which was neat and they had so much yummy food, but it was pricey. I think that was right down from Fisherman?s Wharf at like Pier 15? There was a craft sale across the street that we walked around too.

We saw Lombard (crooked) street and rode one of the cable cars. Don?t forget to get on a cable car at least once. We went down a hill and I thought for sure the cable car was going to get out of control and the breaks wouldn?t work. We had to get off the cable car and get on another one because there was something wrong with ours so that was interesting.

We went to China town and ate at one of the recommended restaurants from Fromers and I shopped in one of the dollar stores in Chinatown and got some really neat cheap stuff. I got this black multi colored polka dot canvas bag for $1 that I get so many compliments on when I use it.

We toured Alcatrez Island which was definitely neat since we love the movie ?The Rock?, haha.We also took a walk and saw the house that was used in the filming of ?Full House?. That was neat for pictures.  I walked around at the Golden Gate Bridge for some pictures, it was loud and nothing special but who goes to San Francisco and doesn?t go there and get some pictures? We walked down to a beachy area of the bay one day and it was such a sunny nice day (it takes a while for the fog to clear every morning) there were so many people out with their dogs and flying kites that we got some really neat pictures.

We had a rental car but we used public transportation and walked everywhere in the city. We got to see so much more that way and talked to people on the bus that pointed us in a direction we wouldn't have normally chosen.
