(@) NT scan vs. AFP test?
Anyone know if there is a difference in what they are testing the blood for in these tests? I know the NT screening is done at 12 weeks or so (i get my "second round" of blood taken this thursday) but the AFP test is done between 15 and 17 weeks and its just another blood test. (i'm already 15 weeks today) They are both for testing for birth defects and genetic issues. I know AFP is testing the alpha-fetoprotein, but I can't find any info on what the NT screening bloodworks test for.
TIA!
Re: (@) NT scan vs. AFP test?
The NT screening actually refers to the ultrasound only (nuchal translucency, which is that fold on the back of the neck that they measure). The bloodwork that they do in combination with the NT scan is the first-trimester screening, which is a blood test for Down's syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. They use both the blood results and the ultrasound measurements together to give you a risk for different chromosomal defects like Down, trisomy 13 and some others. The second-trimester screening (the AFP, which I think is part of the triple or quad screening) is basically the same thing - they use the results of all these tests together to give you a more accurate risk assessment.
ok cool. is there more blood work after that, like in the 3rd tri?
Hmm....not that i remember - I think just the test for gestational diabetes. I don't there are any more genetic screening tests after the 2nd tri. ?
