Gloucester County Girls:

Hi there...Mine and my H's jobs are moving and we are looking into the Swedesboro/Woolwich Twp area.  Can anyone shed some light on the areas such as; are the schools decent, are homes affordable, is the area populated...etc!

Any inside insight would be great to know!  TIA!

Re: Gloucester County Girls:

  • I love our area. We live in Swedesboro - the actually borough, but on the outskirts. We're in a new townhome development (which is still selling, BTW).

The schools are good and the area is growing, fast. Woolwich has many new developments and they are still building. Taxes are pretty high - but comparable to most other areas in South Jersey.

Where we live - we can walk into town (about 3/4 mile). There's a great coffee shop and a couple restaurants w/ bars. They're also starting a new shopping center right near us, and another one is planned on 322 near Kingsway.

If you have any other questions - feel free to email me! ryanandtoni531 at gmail.com.

  • Oh, as far as home prices - it's comparable to surrounding areas (Mullica Hill, East Greenwich, Mantua). Our townhomes are now starting at $189k, I think. Newer single family homes will run you anywhere from $300k+, depending on size and everything.

I grew up in Mullica Hill/Harrison Twp, which is another nice area.

  • I love in West Deptford, which isn't far from sweedesboro/woolwich.  I have heard great things about the schools out there, but I think the prices of homes and taxes are a bit high.  But, from what I've seen, you get alot of land, so it might be worth it to you.  In West Deptford, there's not as much land, but I think taxes are pretty low.
  • Yea, West Deptford definitely has lower taxes.I heard theirs have been going up, too though.

Oh, Logan has lower taxes and still Kingsway School District. They don't have as many new houses, but there are still options.

What area are you living now?

  • We live in Barnegat and travel to Ft. Monmouth for work (45 min ride).  The base is closing and moving to Aberdeen MD.  I know it will be a bit of a ride to MD, but we are looking into staying in NJ if at all possible.  I heard that the school system was pretty good around that area and that is one of the main things the H and I are looking for.

We were also looking into Pennsville, but we heard some not so nice things about the town there.

  • Pennsville would definitely put you closer (about 15 min). I have a couple friends that live in Pennsville and like it. I'm not sure about the schools, though. The prices are a little more affordable there.

You can also check out Woodstown, that isn't too far from DE.

  • Hi there. We just moved from my in-laws which we spent the past 10 months at, very close to Swedesboro. I looked into the area and found the housing very reasonable for what you're getting, BUT the taxes are ridic. The schools are average according to the school rating websites and there is very little in terms of shopping, restaurants, etc. As pp mentioned, they're are building some new stuff, but certanily not on the scale that would make the taxes worth it.  It's a shame, b/c the taxes are so high, they are keeping away so many buyers which are desperately needed.  Also, I think your commute to MD would awful, despite the easy access to 295. Keep in mind this is just my opinion:) GL in your search!

  • We live in the same townhouse community as Toni and absolutely love it!
  • I travel to Baltimore for work in AM rush hour and it usually takes me about 2 hours from G.C. if it is not raining or if a special event isn't going on in DC or too much construction.  Aberdeen I think is closer, so it will take less time.  But I usually get stuck in DE traffic going over the Memorial Bridge because of construction.
  • I live in Logan and work in the Swedesboro-Woolwich School District. Logan is fabulous...great schools, smaller classes, much lower taxes, and because of the smaller size it's a nicer community. S/W is nice, however Woolwich taxes are ridiculous. There aren't any ratables to lower them and probably will never be. The elementary schools are nice. The classes are of average size, there is one brand new and one fairly new school as well as two older schools, the high school is Kingsway (same as Logan) and that's nice also.

Check out Logan. There are some really great house deals in the area and the taxes alone are worth checking it out. Good Luck!
