Big Brother is Google Analytics-ing You

I signed up for this Google Analytics thing. It tracks how many people have visited your site, and gauge how long people are spending looking, etc. Very useful info.

But I just discovered the "map overlay" feature which tracks, down to the city, who was looking. While it's neat, I wonder how many people are tracking me poking around thier sites. I am fascinated, yet a little creeped out.

Within the past day I got a hit in Sydney, Australia. 1 hit in Belgium. 1 in Berkely, CA. 1 in Des Plaines, IL. 1 in Indianola, PA. And 2 in Allentown.

The rest were the Philadelphia area. And that was probably my mom.
Or my dad.
Or me just being anal and checking it a gajillion times. Stick out tongue

Re: Big Brother is Google Analytics-ing You

  • That would make me crazy.  I would be sitting there trying to figure out who I know in Indianola, PA and wondering what the Belgians think of me.  I would drive myself nuts :)  I also have worried that people whose sites I look at know that I'm looking.  Perhaps I should stop internet-stalking people.
  • I've used Google Analytics for work and I'm totally fascinated by what it can track too. It is helpful to make decisions for your site.

    Ditto!

  • I also think that it is really easy to convince myself that no one would want to stalk me.  I'm not that interesting.  I put the FEEDJIT thing on my blog.  Even though not many people have visited (since I haven't shared the link with too many people) I am driving myself nuts trying to figure out who has visited from the different places.

This is totally why I don't think I could handle having a blog :)

  • It does drive me nuts trying to figure it out. I look at it and think, "Did they like me? Oh please like me. Come back, please."

Seeing the Australia person I need to resist the urge to update my page to say "G'Day! And welcome to my website! Shrimp on the barbee? Fosters?"... To obvious?

I'm trying wrap my noggin around that I'm out there for the whole WORLD to see. Time to think bigger I guess.

You are hilarious!  I definitely think you should make your blog public.

  • I got antsy and just checked it again! Now I have Spain, Italy, and Canada to add to Australia and Belgium.

    New site intro:

Hola, G'Day, Hallo, and Ciao! Any way you say it, "Hi"! Welcome to my website. Today was a good day. For my morning workout I took a jog. Boy that felt like I was running with the bulls! Aye de mio! I followed my work out with a tasty Belgian waffle with strawberries. Yum.

On my way to the outback for my diggredoo lesson, I got pulled over by a Mountie. I said, "What seems to be the problem, ehh?". Even though I was said I was late for a hockey game, I still got a ticket for speeding. So by the time I got home I just had a dinner of lasagna with a wonderful bottle of chianti. Sang a little opera, then went to bed.

I'm so international. I speak everyone's language. Hmm

  • We've been using Google analytics for months at work, but I never thought to use it for my blog.  Now I'm totally adding it, because I've been wondering what traffic is like, since everyone tells me they read it, but people very rarely comment.

I kept all my blog settings super-private, so it will also help me to see if maybe people lost the link and can't find the site anymore.
