Get a load of this...

I had always heard mortgage brokers were shady, but get a load of this story.  So, we've been looking at houses....got pre-approved for a loan on our own accord.  The realtor we've been working with also suggested this particular mortgage broker to us, so I called him just to see what it was all about.  I never actually talked to him...only left a message.  So, then yesterday, the realtor sends over an email with a loan approval in it from this mortgage guy!  And the letter said that our credit was pulled, we were approved for such and such an amount by such and such bank.  I about flipped my lid!  I hadn't even talked to the guy, let alone authorized him to pull our credit!  You all know I can get nasty when I get ticked off, so this guy called me right away (after a few emails back to the realtor).  Apparently, he never pulled our credit (how could he have, he didn't have our social sec. #s), but still!  This letter was a piece of unethical sh-t!  Then the broker guy proceeds to tell him he was just doing a favor for our realtor, and we were never meant to see the letter.  What the hell?!??!  Then he proceeds to tell me I should stop over to chat with him about his mortgages when the time comes.  Um, hell no.  And when I told him that, he just laughed in disbelief.   So, as of now, it appears that our credit was not pulled, and that letter was just stating a lie.  Now, I'm wondering if I should ditch the realtor we've been working with, too....although he appears to claim that he thought the mortgage guy had our financial info.  I just called our family attorney to get some further insight on this....but boy, was my blood boiling.  Just had to get that out.  Thanks for making it this far!  :)

I don't think I'm cut out for this home-buying process.  Just when Madeleine starts sleeping through the night, now this is keeping me up!

Re: Get a load of this...

  • OMG...how shady!  I would be upset too!  I hope this isn't with the real estate agent I recommended to you.  We dealt with an awesome mortgage company through him and had no issues like this before.
  • Wow. Just wow.  I know when we were getting our house dealing with the mortgage people (who are friends of sil) was not fun.  They wanted to give wacky financing (that was probably more $$ for them) and we just wanted fix rate.  The realtor and mortgage guy probably have a deal worked out, do you have anything signed with the realtor?
  • Thankfully, no signed deal with the realtor, so we could walk away.  Up until this point though, I've been pretty happy with him, and don't know if I should hold it against him or not.  And Lesli, it definitely wasn't the one you recommended.  I might have to go back and reconsider though.
  • WOW!  That is really crazy!  I would be so irritated!  So, the realtor didn't know about the shady-ness?

On a better note, YAY for Maddy sleeping through the night!

  • Oh my gosh Jill! That's a crazy story. I'm glad that you put your foot down and are going to work with someone else. I still feel like we got taken for a ride with our first mortgage. And we wonder how we got into a mortgage crisis.....
  • Wow!  That is crazy...you would think w/ all the stuff going on w/ the economy now and this big housing crisis that anyone involved w/ mortgages would be more on the straight and narrow.

It would also make me question the realtor and I don't blame you for wanting to look into working with someone else.  If the mortgage guy he recommended is shady, he's probably aware of it and is more than likely just as shady!  Good luck w/ everything though...it's def. not a fun process minus the looking at houses part :)

  • wow, that is definitely shady..sounds like the realtor is a screw ball too.
  • The realtor and the broker probably have a deal worked out.  I know the first time I almost bought in our development (the house was actually about 4 doors down from where we live now) I didn't know anything about house buying really and they pushed me to apply through their broker, etc and it was very scary to me.  They were trying to push me into an ARM too.  Considering the current economy I am so glad that I went with my gut feeling on that deal!

  • Wow!  That is really scary.  And I sometimes wonder how less informed people get roped into crazy mortgages . . I guess this is how.  I agree with Charlene - you would think more mortgage people would be on the up and up in the current economy and mortgage market.  Glad you were able to walk away from that realtor too.
