Skiiers/snowboarders

What "local" mountains out here are good? I've heard good things about Mountain High and Mt. Baldy, which are a little closer than Big Bear. Where do you like to go?

Re: Skiiers/snowboarders

  • We used to go to Mt. High because it was close. It was always crowded though and the "snow" wasn't all that great. Big Bear is farther away but have more real snow.
  • I would stay away from Mt. Baldy.  It's a terrible course.

Mt. High would be your next bet.  It is closer than Big Bear.  The only thing I didn't like about Mt. High, it was crowded all the time.

  • Baldy, hands down. Totally Rustic, shiit road to get there, but awesome AWESOME terrain

What do you mean? I understand if they don't have the snow it's bad, but H was just there on Wednesday with a friend from CO and they both said it was awesome. Baldy is our favorite So Cal resort. Of course, there isn't much in the way of beginner terrain, but it's way less crowded than Mt. High.

The only benefit to Mt. High is that the road to get there is pretty straight/easy to drive

  • Oooh, that was my other question. We're a little deterred from going to Big Bear because of chains. Do you guys have them? Need them?

We'd love to go to Mammoth at some point, but it seems everyone we know just has friends there. So we're like, "Where do we stay?" and everyone's like, "Dunno."?

  • You really need chains in your car any time you are going to the mountains, even if you have A/4WD - you just never know. Better to be safe than sorry! I have seen some pretty bad accidents, as well as seen people get turned away and back down the hill, which seriously sucks after sitting in traffic for god knows how many hours trying to get to the ski area. Spend a little extra cash and get diamond style chains that go on without moving your car and you will lose your fear of chains in a heartbeat. The chains i bought for my new car even self tighten so I'm totally spoiled these days. You can get away with cables most of the time, but the diamond style chains are low profile and give much better traction.

If you are worried about mountain driving, the Mountain High is your best bet, and if you go to Mammoth (pretty damn easy drive most of the time), stay in town and catch the shuttle to the hill. As far as Mammoth lodging goes, Motel 6 is cheap and clean and right on the red line. My old condo complex does rentals which can be more cost effective, esp. if you'd rather cook, and if you have some more money to spend - The Village is nice and right in the middle of everything, as well as easy access to the slopes, and Juniper Springs is slopeside but a little more removed. I also have a friend that rents out his condo if you have a larger group that's walking distance - it's a one bedroom loft that sleeps like 6 or 8 and I think he usually charges about $200 a night peak.

  • Thank you SO much Serendipite! I am itching to go to Mammoth with this newfound information! :)

    ?

  • Any time you have questions, feel free to ask!

Oh and i forgot to say you can sometimes find rentals here too!
