recommend a warm vacation spot....

with sun, sand and clear water beaches.

I have had a crappy winter and want to plan a short vacation (meaning a short plane ride please).  I am considering Puerto Rico or a close by island.  I don't want to spend a fortune and don't want to be bogged down with sightseeing but prefer to relax and do nothing. Suggestions please!!!!

Re: recommend a warm vacation spot....

  • I'll stick you in my suit case on the way to Barbados.  Cruising is always fun and takes you to nice sunny spots.
  • I am a huge fan of the all-inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Secrets Capri is my fave! It's also a direct flight, which is a huge bonus.

  • Aruba or Barbados are both great. I believe Barbados has more AI's though.
  • We looked into the Grand Caymans last year. It seems like a nice, relaxing place and wasn't too, too pricey.
  • Spirit Airlines is having a sale right now on certain locations. You could go to Clearwater, FL (fly into Tampa, FL) it would be a 2 hr flight. The highs for right now are in the 70's.

  • FL - South Beach, Sanibel Island or Key West

Jamaica has some reasonably priced resorts, and it's a shorter flight.

  • Grand Cayman is gorgeous. I also love Mexico (on the gulf side).  It might not be the cleanest place, but the beaches are pretty and it is so happy/cheerful (and not too expensive).

  • Just a little FYI, Key West is not a good beach destination. It is great for partying, and relaxing (by the pool) there are only two beaches both attached to hotels. They are typical crowded. If you go there pick a hotel with a nice pool. Also, it's hard to get to from here, fly to Miami (2.5 hrs ), drive to Key West ( 4- 5 hrs )

  • what about cruise to bermuda?  beautiful clean little island with pink sand beaches (horeshoe bay, or elbow beach are the best). there are 5 night cruises leaving from philly and bayonne.  or you can have a short flight there and stay at one of the all inclusives places.

  • Oh yea - duh, you said beaches. I didnt realize. Yea, Key West may not be a good choice. The Westin has a nice pool area there. And you can get a flight from Miami to Key West. I'm not sure about prices, though.
  • My mom went to Jamaica a couple of years ago and stayed at a Riu all inclusive place.  She liked it.

  • We loved St. Lucia...You can also go to the Bahama's.  Go to cheapcarribean.com and see if there are any last minute deals that you can take advantage of.
  • Grand Cayman is beautiful and it's really clean.  What about Atlantis in the Bahamas?  Can I go with you?
  • Atlantis is very expensive. But I do suggest Sanibel Island/Marco Island or Naples on Florida's west coast.

Now, I live on Florida's east coast - so you could always come see in Delray Beach!

  • Aruba is a great little friendly island, I believe the Divi Beach Resort is all inclusive, and affordable.  I do believe that a part of their beach is along the main road though.  I always hear good things about Punta Cana, I've never been, but my friend goes every year with her family.
  • My parents just got back from Aruba yesterday and they loved it.
  • i like the bahamas...you can get a direct flight, it is easy, there are a lot of cheaper options for hotel, people are nice, water is beautiful, i never felt like people tried to rip me off (like i did in turks and caicos), and there is no need for sightseeing (although we did a really fun all day boat trip). atlantis is a cool resort and you never have to leave....plus it is huge so you get tons of exercise walking around the grounds!  you can get really cheap rooms there that are totally fine in my opinion.

i have heard puerto rico is fun and that would be good because there is no need for a passport and customs nonsense.

let us know what you decide.

I second Secrets Capri!  We love all the Secrets Resorts, but Capri was one of our favorites.  The only one we liked better was Excellence Riviera Maya (it used to be Secrets).  We went there on our honeymoon and that was our absolute favorite so far.

  • My parents are going to Excellence Playa Mujeres in March and they got a pretty good deal. I've heard it's a gorgeous resort. I think they paid around $1200/person for 4 nights including airfare.
  • Thanks for all of the recommendations!!! We just came back from Mexico so dh does not want to go back right now.  I am leaning towards Jamaica though since it will cost about 25 cents for airfare and hotel.  All I really want to do is sit in the sun by the pool and read a good book.  I realize I could do that without leaving the country but I think boarding a plane would be much more fascinating and make the pool, sun and book reading that much better.

are you still thinking about the rockhouse?

  • We were going to stay at Xtabi in Jamaica (before we decided to cancel and save for the babe). I think it was a little more affordable than Rockhouse, but same concept. It got good reviews on Tripadvisor.

If you want all-inclusive/beach - my brother and his GF just stayed at Rose Hall and liked it.

  • We really want to visit rockhouse but have decided not to right now.  The hotel is $355 a night plus airfare for the two of us and then spending money for food, drinks and entertainment.  We are trying to stay lowkey and will probably go to Montego Bay and splurge on rockhouse at another point in time.  Looking at trips, we can go to MB for under 2 grand as opposed to Rockhouse.  Rockhouse is gorgeous though!!!!
