Gardening help

Hello ladies! Since I will be off for a few weeks over the summer I have decided to completely overhaul my gardens. I have been trying to pay attention to other people's landscaping to get ideas of what I like and what will grow well in our area. What do you have growing in your yard and what is your favorite plant for a garden? TIA.

PS- I all ready have lots of azaleas, some gardenias, magnolias, lantana and some hibiscus.

  • I love my Hibiscuses. I have acouple variaties of them and my favorite are the treed hubiscuses. They are really pretty! also have purple heather in my front yard which grows great and is really colorful. Its a low plant so its in front of some of the taller ones in my garden. I also really like Iris'. I have some growning in my yard and they're really pretty when they bloom. If you're looking for a vine check out Carolina Jasmine. It got pretty yellow or white flowers. We're growing them up the side of one of our fenses. Oh also, I love roses although i don't have any!

I have a trellis for the jasmine, just haven't gotten around to buying it yet. I love the way it smells! Jasmine and gardenias are probably two of my favorite plants to have in a yard.

  • I have a flower bed in front of my house with gladiolas, lillies, and azaleas.  They are typically spring bloomers which means most often I have just green bushes and stems but it is very low maintenance which is good since I have so little time for gardening nowadays Sad

Also, my grandmother is wonderful at growing African violets so I have a few on a window sill in my kitchen since they tend to like the indoors.  They are small but beautiful little flowers.

I have always wanted to plant a tree in my backyard and also an herb and vegetable garden.  Maybe when things settle down for me I'll be able to devote some time to that.

I hope you have a very relaxing vacation!

I really like our camellias and agapanthus and find they do very well (and we have a tendency to kill plants).  We also have variegated ginger and bird of paradise, which make a nice contrast to the azaleas we have.   Bougainvillea also does well on a trellis.

Based on personal experience, I would recommend waiting to plant until the fall.  The summers are so hot that it can be hard for the new plants to get established.

  • by far, one of my least favorite domestic tasks.. i went to lowe's a few weeks ago and loaded up my car... then planed all of the crap..

i didn't know anything about plants so of course half of th are dying bc they are direction sunlight.. i am such an idiot..

BHG.com was very helpful to me.. you could even virtually build your garden...and choose your plants...

hope you have better luck than idid

  • OOh, I just saw this post.

I don't know the name of the bush but they grow fairly large and it's purple.  I love Caladiums.  They're almost impossible to kill plus they're a bulb so after they die, next Spring they jsut pop back up.  We have a Gardenia bush.  The purple bush, caladiums, and gardenia are the most hearty for us and we're no greenthumbs.

We just put in blue delphinium.  They did not keep their flower and just look like weeds now.
