Never been here! Travelling help...

My husband and I will be travelling to New Orleans next week Thursday through Sunday.   I haven't booked anything yet and really need help on where to stay, since we've never been there before.  It seems like I hear about the French Quarter being where to stay, but we are definitely not looking for a party atmosphere.  We'd like somewhere quiet, but close to restaurants and historical sites to see.

Which brings me to my second question... what is there to do?  We like historical buildings, pretty houses, ghost tours, etc. and love good restaurants, but will not be going out to the bars at night.

Will it be too noisy at night anywhere in the French Quarter?  Please help!  Thanks!

Re: Never been here! Travelling help...

  • How nice is nice for you? Le Pavilion, the Sheraton, the Westin, marriot on Canal, Ritz Carlton and the two W Hotels are all really nice and not in the quarter. The Sheraton, Westin, marriot, and Ritz are on the fringe though apx a block away from the quarter.
There is a ton of 'non party' stuff to do. The Aquarium is supposed to be great (we're going on the 14th). There are historic homes to tour, take the St Charles trolley, or the D day museum.
As for food you will NOT go hungry in NOLA. There is haute cuisine and shall I call it low cuisine (po boys, etc). Let us know what you like and we can make recommendations.

  • Thanks for the advice.  We won't have a car, so we want to be close enough to walk to restaurants and things, but don't want a window facing Bourbon St., maybe.  I definitely wouldn't want to be woken up from street noise.  I'd like to cap the price at about $100 - there seems to be a lot of good prices.  What do you know about or recommend from these choices:

Saint Louis Hotel, Royal St. Charles, International House, Queen & Crescent Inn?

They're all under $100 for 3 nights.  It'd be nice to have a pool, too, but it seems only the chains have pools.

Also, would you recommend renting a car for only 3 days?  It would be nice to see some plantations, but I understand they're far away.

    Thanks again!

  • I'm not familiar with any of those hotels. The Sheraton is $119 a night, and you might be able to negotiate that down if you call the hotel directly then you would also get your pool. You can do the three major plantations in one day they aren't that far apart so if that is something you are really interested in doing, I would rent a car for the day and do it.
Please also bear in mind that it is BLAZING hot down here, especially compared to Chicago. So dress accordingly.
PS I think the Sheraton also has a free airport shuttle so make sure you take that into consideration when looking at hotels.

  • I didn't read the other posts because I'm lazy so if I repeat, then it's worth it.

Definitely go to Cafe du Monde and eat beignets.  Walk to the Cabildo (museum) and see that, then go next door to St. Louis Cathedral, there's another museum next to there too.  Also in the vicinity is the Mint.  You can look at the French Market (flea market).

The shops on Royal St. are fun.  The Riverwalk is a mall and it has a great view of the river.  Also down there is the Aquarium of the Americas (indoors +).  You could take a riverboat cruise.

  • We just left the Dauphine Orleans, it was cheap, had a pool and amazing! Very nice, especially for the price.

My daughter is an Aqua Kid at the Aquarium and now works with the Insectarium too, I highly recommend both. The really cute kid feeding the penguins is mine. Ha!  PP recommendations are right on too.

The food, well I dunno you can't go wrong, everything here is great.

    Have fun!
