xp: rec your appliances please:)

And just to preface, the super high end stuff just isn't in our budget;)

We need to get a new fridge and probably washer/dryer in the next few weeks and starting to research is OVERWHELMING to say the least! Any recs for your energy-star rated appliances that you love and why??  Or any tips on things you found helpful when searching?

Re: xp: rec your appliances please:)

  • We've been quite happy with Fridgedaire products. NO complaints. If you like stainless, they also have a stainless look then you can still use magnets. We got those for the house we're selling in PA. Plus regular stainless shows all the finger prints and drives Dh nuts.

Our washer/dryer is the frontload and I just love them. I just compare the efficiancy with the tags in the stores. You can also use the gov. website i think to compare or more appliance websites allows you to do a side by side  as well.

This is really helpful - thanks for even just pointing this out for me:) DH has been the one out looking and driving me NUTS because if he got to choose, he's just buy the cheapest thing he could find! I went hunting today and got totally overwhelmed and even just thinking about things like comparing the tags in the stores or writing the model numbers down to come home and compare online is something that I didn't think to do amidst trying to take it all in since I didn't even know where to start on picking something!

  • We've been super happy with the LG appliances we got for our kitchen in Sept '07.  We've looked at the new fridges because eventually we plan to get rid of our ugly white one.  In terms of fridges I would think about what features are important to you for example here's my wish list:

french door style with freezer on the bottom
freezer door/drawer that tilts open and slides out (ideal scenario)
large pull out deli tray style drawer for entertaining and fitting large platters of food
    adjustable settings for crisper drawers
water/ice maker on the door (more for DH and to get ice cubes for Byron)
real SS (honestly they have made big improvements and alot of them don't get fingerprints like the older versions)

For washers/dryers: I really want front load w/d next.  Our current ones came with the house but I would love to replace them and install a countertop over them for folding laundry.

The two on the top of my list are the LG's with the steam feature and the Whirlpool Duet.  My mom has the Duet w & d since Oct. '05 and she absolutely loves them and has nothing but wonderful things to say about them.

  • If you look for a new dishwasher in the future, I love our Whirlpool Gold dishwasher.  It works very well and is very quiet.

Consumer Reports actually had some good reviews and comparisons on appliances that we used when we got new appliances for our kitchen.
