Small space designing mavens

Our new place's kitchen is tiny! Smaller than the ones we had in NYC. We have fit everything except our spices. Any suggestions for spice storage? I have a few of the magnetic jars that go onto the fridge but I new storage for the lessor used ones and we have about 20-25 left. We have one wall space about 20 inches wide and the entire side of the fridge.

Re: Small space designing mavens

  • A friend of mine had this problem and instead of using under her kitchen sink as a place to put only cleaning supplies she put her cleaning supplies in a small sealed container under the sink as a way to protect the space and then she put a little spice rack on the door under her sink so she could put her seasonings there!

Hope that helps! It's not a bad idea, i think i might do this myself!

  • I saw a thing on Pinterest maybe where you hook a magnet strip up inside your cabinet and then put magnets on the spice jar so they are tucked inside the cabinet.  Post pics of your new place!

  • Or what about hanging a magnetic one on the wall?

Ikea has a spice rack that would work well with this idea. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40070185/

  • On the door, inside the cabinet won't work, I had to put roasting pans and other large items in them that take up almost all of the depth. Under the sink won't work, because it is full of other things, but not cleaning supplies, it was the only place tall enough for the blender. Thinking on Shannon's suggestion, I might do so etching with magnets and the fridge, and putting something on each jar, or a metal shelf on the wall. Back to the drawing board. I'll send pictures soon, we're still not 100% unpacked, hoping art work goes up today. I have to write out for y'all all of the SNAFUS because some were glorious!

I've heard bad reviews on those jars for finer ground spices such as cinnamon. They end up clogging the thread on the cap so it no longer holds a tight closure.

  • It might be a slight pain in the butt to get to, but could you install some sort of rack beind your basement door? My BIL has one which I'm totally jealous of, but our basement door is hung in the wrong direction to make it practical.

  • I cant decide if this is a crazy idea or not, but what about hanging spices over your cabinet door but on the outside? If you get tasteful baskets and spice jars I dont think it would look too bad and if you hang them on the cabinets up top by the stove it would be really convenient and away from little hands. Or maybe it would look stupid, I cant decide.

Also, I saw a pinterest project where a metal cookie sheet was covered in contact paper and hung on the wall--decorative and magnetic....if you're going the magnetic jar route.

Final thought...does your stove have a drawer underneath? You could put spices, or other stuff, in there in a sealed container. Im not sure if it would get too hot there or not though?

  • Is there room anywhere to hang an overhead pot and pan holder so that you could free up some cabinet space? I need pics to be more helpful.

  • I'm all for hiding stuff and making my house look like no one lives here (although that's just my goal...it always is a mess in real life). Do you have a basement door you could put an organizer on (I like that idea). Or, could you put a basket or something above the fridge?
