Picking a pediatrician

When do you think I should start contacting pediatricians? I think I probably know who I'm going with, but I just didn't know when to call, or what to ask when I do.

...hello out there!

Re: Picking a pediatrician

  • I would go ahead and call now, but have some back-ups just in case something happens and that pediatrician is no longer available when LO gets here.

  • Ask about their hours (do they have weekend hours), vaccine protocols, who you call at 1am if you have a question, whether you see that same pediatrician every time or not, and who you would see if that pediatrician is unavailable.

  • We did this about a month ago, so around 28 weeks. The one we ended up picking has info sessions every other weekend for expectant parents, so we went in with a few other couples and got orientation to the practice. They answered all the questions I had plus way more than I had even thought of. It wouldn't hurt to make the call now, especially since you already have a practice in mind.

  • I'm in the minority. Where we are you have one main practice and then there are 2 others on their own but still with the hospital we wanted. We decided to go with who was on call and switch if we didn't like them. I'm glad we did because otherwise we probably would have gone with the big practice. R's pedi is who was making rounds that day and we love her! She's truly amazing!

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!
  • I'd go ahead and start looking.  Some of them might not be accepting new patients, so if there's one that you really like, try to get them to accept you early.

  • I also contacted early to make sure they were accepting new patients and to ask a few questions. I wanted to know that they accepted our insurance, where they have privileges , how urgent after hours issues are handled as well as mon urgent questions and breast feeding support. I go to a big practice and wanted to know whether we would be seen by one doc or if we would see them all. I vaccinated on the regular schedule but if for some reason you plan to deviate from that I would ask their policy.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
