After the last 2 weeks, I officially hate Tuesdays.
Last Tuesday was our 5-hour night at the clinic/ER for DH's illness.
Last night...I had a really effing long day yesterday. I got to work at 7 am. I had to be at my Absolut training at 7 pm, so there wasn't time for me to get home after work and back down into the city in time for training. So I didn't get home until about 10 pm.
I went to scoop the litter boxes before going to bed, and Zoey asked to go outside (she rings a bell). I let her out and went to scoop. I heard her bark to come back in as I was scooping the second box; I pitched the bag in the trash can and turned to let her in the back slider. I noticed she was seriously foaming around her mouth and agitated. I slid the door open and started to bend over, trying to figure out what she'd gotten into.
And then the smell hit me. Like a freaking invisible wall, it threw me back. "Oh God! Oh my GOOOOOOD!!!!" I yelled. DH came around the corner to the kitchen and said, "Zoey got hit by a skunk, didn't she?" He must have gotten a slight skunky whiff through the open office window. And he was dead on.
@Amandaf6383,
@seahorse01, and
@lilliesandvino: that whiff of skunk you get driving down the road that you like the smell of? That is but a minor layer of the overpoweringly noxious reek of concentrated skunk spray. It was a permeating cloud of burning chemicals and rubber underlayed with the familiar and far more tolerable skunk scent. And Zoey had been struck full on in the face. Almost exclusively.
I spent close to 45 minutes trying to detox her, the go-to solution being hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn. It was hard to clean her with this though, since I couldn't get it in her eyes or mouth, and it was her head/face that needed it the most. I aimed the shower sprayer straight into her face to try and irrigate her eyes. I rubbed a cotton ball soaked in vinegar all over her head. And finally, I applied some of my own homemade body butter to try and counteract the harshness of the wash solution on her poor skin. She was given liberal spoonfuls of PB for being so unbelievably good during the cleaning ordeal. And then the poor baby, for the first time in a very long time, was put in her crate for the night, at which point she pathetically vocalized her unhappiness at the situation for several long, heart-wrenching minutes.
Thankfully, upon letting her out this morning, the skunky smell is almost entirely gone. She'll get a bath with her moisturizing shampoo this evening, and probably another rub-down with either more body butter or just straight coconut oil.
And Pepe had better run far, far away and never return, or DH will shoot his little striped ass off.

Your description of the smell made me laugh though - it's like you were writing an ad for a really bad cologne.
I'm glad the smell is dissipating, though. Sorry you had to go through that.

Ohno! Poor baby and poor you!
Once a skunk must have sprayed our house during the night, DH and I both woke up thinking there was a fire because it travelled up 3 stories and burned our eyes and throats. It is seriously so much stronger than you think!
