BTDT Moms: What to wear in hospital

I am a bigger girl and was wondering what everyone wore while they were at the hospital? I'm going to get some nursing tanks (I'm also big chested so I'm curious to see how supportive these are) but as pants and tops I'm at a lose? Also do I buy maternity clothes for this or normal clothes?

Re: BTDT Moms: What to wear in hospital

  • I brought my own gown for labor and delivery since I am small and didn't want to have to swim in the giant hospital gown. Then for afterward we bottle fed so I brought comfy jammie pants and t shirts but couldn't wear pants so my mom made a run to Walmart and got me a few nightgowns. Theywweren't very pretty but they did the job.

  • I brought in some comfy tanks and yoga pants.  I lived in them at the hospital.  I personally did not do maternity size for them, I just got a size up in the tanks.

  • Yeah, I was wondering if you have a C section if it would be hurt having pants or something rubbing that area.
  • Yeah probably...I had a vaginal delivery but it was uhm somewhat traumatic. 3rd degree tearing in a starburst pattern. I didn't wear pants for 2 weeks and after that it was sweatpants/jammie pants for 7 weeks after that! Also my belly was really tender afterwards.

  • I was there for four days, day two I was itching to wear the yoga pants I brought. I was sooooo very hot in the room but had to keep the AC at a normal temp if not warm for the babies. Tanks would have been nice.
The first two days the gown was best. They check you all the time and you've got a lot going on down there.

  • I had sweat pants. I didn't want yoga pants with the giant pads they give you. I mostly wore a nursing bra with the gown and sweatpants. This allowed for lots of skin to skin.

  • That's a good idea Backseat, I plan on doing a lot of skin to skin....yeah I just want to have something packed in there in case I want to wear something other than the gowns...I know at least for the first day I'll wear it.
  • I wore the hospital gown, no bra and the hospital mesh undies the whole time. I didn't want to wear real clothes bc of the ice packs and such and the gown was really comfy.

  • I brought a pair of yoga pants and I also had a pair of comfy maternity lounge pants that I wore around as well. I'm sure with a C-section or pretty bad tearing that this may not work. I HATED the hospital gown and just felt gross so I was happy to have my own clothes.

  • Those ice packs were amazing.
Take a few for the road.

This was me too. Plus why risk ruining my stuff. It's also easiest since nurses/docs come in to check you often. I was only there for a day though both times.

  • I was there for 4 days.  I wore the gown for the first day post delivery then I switched to a t-shirt and loose pj pants.  My t-shirt was maternity and still fit fine.

  • I had a c/s.  Because of my spinal I was not allowed up for 24 hours.  As soon as I was allowed up I put on my sweats and a nursing tank.  Right before delivering I was a 36 DDD and the bravado tank was plenty supportive.  I'm now down to a 36 DD but no longer bfing.  Those first 24 hours my boobs hung out in the open.  I changed into the sweats and tank and was discharged 24 hours later so I wore that home as well.  With the c/s I needed something extra comfy across the incision and the tank worked well for bfing.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!
  • I wore the hospital gown the whole time. I did have a c/s and anything in the area hurt. I asked for extra pairs of mesh panties and wore those (and sweat pants) for a few weeks after delivery because I was scared to wear anything that would hurt. The hospital gown was easy for BFing because I could just unsnap a sleeve.

Be warned, though. Even though I had no swelling during my pregnancy, my legs were TREE TRUNKS postpartum and the shoes I brought did not fit me to go home (it was February so flip flops were not an option). I ended up leaving in the hospital socks, a t-shirt, sweatpants and my coat.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • I had a pretty short stay, the first day/night I just wore the hospital gown. The second day I wore a nursing nightgown. It came with a robe as well but I was so hot all the time I didn't use it (and it was January). Didn't wear any of my own underwear until we got home, the mesh undies are awesome. I brought lots of nursing tanks and yoga pants but didn't end up wearing anything except for one pair of yoga pants and a large comfy t-shirt on the ride home. I exclusively wore slip-on backless shoes at the end of my pregnancy and on the way home as well, since my feet were too fat to stuff into anything.

  • I wore the hospital gown the whole time. M was born at 10:42 pm and I showered the next morning and put on a clean gown. I went home the next morning. I didn't even wear a bra because my milk didn't come in until we got home. I put on a robe when visitors came or when I got out of bed to walk around.

  • Yeah my feet have been so swollen for like months now so I'm figuring they are not going to down over night so I have the only pair of shoes I have to wear, they are Nike slip on flip flops with the Velcro you can make bigger or smaller. I think I'll bring some comfy pj capri bottoms and buy some nursing tanks and pack maybe a tshirt or two and be done with it. If I think the gowns are comfy I'll just wear those!
