Dave Ramsey recs??

FI and I are getting married in 2 months and are going to be getting our joint accounts in the next week. We don't make a whole lot and have a decent amount of debt between student loans, CC's, etc. We are planning on using this time as a fresh start and to really focus on our financial situtation and eliminating debt. We have heard good things about Dave Ramsey and would like to start his program.

Has anyone had experience with it? We are just a little overwhelmed in where to start since he has SO many tools out there. Read book? FPU classes? (our church is planning on holding this this fall) The online subscription program? All tips would be appreciated!

Re: Dave Ramsey recs??

  • I got the book "Total Money Makeover" its breaks down the basic plan and has some fluffy stuff in it too. It gives all the info you need to follow his program. We are mostly following it with a few differences because that's what works for us. Its fairly basic, so I dont think classes or a program is really necessary.

  • I would start with the book like PP said. Total Money Makeover pretty much gives you all the information you need to get started on his program. If by fall you feel like you are struggling and need more motivation, then I would probably take the class at your church.

Also, his radio show is a lot of information. He is on 1-4 pm Central Time every day and you can stream him live off his website. Information given always depends upon who calls in and what they ask, but generally is great information to help keep you along your way.

  • I haven't read any of his books but I find his radio show to be really interesting and helpful. I have a job with a bit of monotony to I can listen to it on my phone while I work. He has an I Heart Radio station that streams it 24 hrs a day but I do believe it repeats itself after 3 hrs (same time period as one of his shows). From listening to it, I've learned about most of his principles and his instructions in his Total Money Makeover book.

  • I actually took a class in high school called "life management." We spent the first half of the semester on healthy relationships and the second on finances. I was lucky to have Dave Ramsey taught and showed to me so early. I still have all the printed materials I decided to save.

I would recommend the book since basically that is where I got my start five years back. It has been wonderful to have this knowledge and it is so easy to do. We have modified the program somewhat to fit out needs as well. Also listening to him is good. He is quite comical.

  • Awesome. Thanks for the tips everyone! I will get the book and start there. I wasn't sure if you needed the $10/mo subscription to the online tools to be successful.

  • When it first came out my dad and aunts got it and we made it a family event to watch the videos, i was fairly young at the time but i remember a lot of it and its helped me be able to stay financially stable over the last 3 years of living on my own. My fiance is going to redo the video course again with me because hes not so great with money. i highly suggest at least trying it
  • we took the classes at my moms church a while ago. my mom paid for her, my sister, brother in law, me,  and my husband to take the class. i also bought the book. hubby doesnt like the idea of completly giving up credit cards. but i plan on having us revisit daves plan again since we just had a baby and i gave up my full time job for a part time job to be home with the baby as much as possible.
  • Reading the book is all you really need.  Read it - do it.

The changes you may need to make in your lifestyle may not be easy.

If you need emotional support to hang in there over time, then the Financial Peace group would be helpful.

Your local library may have his books and materials - no need to buy them..

  • See if you can find his daily radio program on a station in your area - that will help you as well.
  • We took FPU as part of our pre-marital counseling. It was invaluable and I would do it again in a heart beat. I also listen to his radio show and have learned a lot.

However, H and I have wandered slightly away from his plan and use the YNAB budgeting system rather than Dave's worksheets. We still roll with the same principals, but use a different budgeting system. It works better for us because H and I have a variable income month to month.
