Children's Books

What is your number one go to book to read, buy or give for a child? I am trying to start a little Library for the twins and I am unsure what to look for, I have a couple already that I love (don't remember all of them or I would tell you!) I just need more :-)

Re: Children's Books

  • Anything by Sandra Boynton. We have most of the classics - Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Pat the Bunny, Dr. Seuss books, Guess How Much I Love You.  I also have all of Shel Silverstein's books and love to read them to Liam.

One thing nobody told me was that for when they are really little, you will want a few cloth books. I can't give Liam board books or actual books to play with because he'll destroy them. He loves playing with his cloth books, though.

  • If I am going to a baby shower that requests books, I either buy HP #1, Where the Sidewalk Ends, or The Stinky Cheese Man and other Stupid Fairy Tales.

  • I always loved the Berenstain Bears. My go to shower gift book is always either a Berenstain Bears book or a lot of times I'll do cloth books.

  • I love the Sandra Boynton books as well. Dr. Seuss is always good. I think young babies enjoy the cadence. Where the Wild Things Are, If You Give A Dog a Donut, are also popular at our house. Goodnight Moon. Curious George.

  • Mo Willems books are great
This. Also, my favorite childrens book is The Giving Tree.

  • My kids liked Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See and If you give a pig a pancake.  Or any Karen Katz books.  I recommend board books for when they are little.  I bought them a lot of nice books to read to them when they were really young.  They totally destroyed most of them.  They would grab them and tear at the pages while I was reading or get ahold of them when I wasn't looking.  My kids didn't have the attention span as toddlers to sit through longer stories.

  • Ditto Shel Silverstein, but I also love to give the Little Critter books, or Busy Town/Richard Scarry, since those were some of my favorites growing up.

  • F is for Farm (Priddy Books) is a touch and feel board book that my child loved to DEATH.  So I tend to buy that book for people with babies.  Dog by Matthew Van Fleet was also a favorite in our house (appropriate from age 0-3).  The tails move and wag and lots of dogs to pet.  I second Mo Willams for preschool age.
  • Audrey loves Brown Bear, Brown Bear and the Llama Llama books.  I prefer to not have to read those ever again.
    :P

My favorites are I Love It When You Smile by Sam McBratney, My Precious Little Bear by Claire Freedman, I Love You, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt and Time For Bed by Mem Fox.
