So how DO you use coconut oil as conditioner?

I didn't want to hijack the "products" thread, so I'm asking here instead.

I already make a body butter using coconut oil (along with shea butter and almond oil), so adding more coconutty goodness to my beauty product arsenal wouldn't be stretch.

  • Hmmm...this wouldn't work for me, since I exclusively shower at night. I'd have to get up too much earlier to shower and blow dry my hair in the morning.

Try it on a weekend. I only do it like once a week cause I have tons of hair and it's a pain in my ass.

  • Do you liquefy the oil in the microwave before applying or do you put it on in the wax form?

  • Lucky, would you please share the measurements you use in your recipe for the body butter? I'd like to try it.
  • Whatever you do, don't do it if you're doing the no shampoo (baking soda) method of washing your hair!! It won't come out!! This is how I ruined my no 'poo streak :( You definitely need a real shampoo to get it out!

  • Thanks for the warning, @RockABye! I didn't have any intention of going no 'poo, and I definitely won't if I do the oil.

@knitknat28, you use 1 part shea butter (the pure stuff that's solid at room temp) and 1/2 part each of coconut and almond oil.

Melt the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler set up, then let the melted mix cool for about 30 minutes. Stir in the almond oil. Then I stick it in the fridge for a while. When it's semi-solid, you whip it (I use a hand mixer) all up then put it in your jar(s) of choice. 1 cup shea with 1/2 cups coconut and almond oils will get you around 28 oz body butter. You can add any essential oils of your choice for scent.
