Re: Thursday Randoms

  • I got news at the dentist yesterday that no parent wants to hear.   He's referring Noah to an orthodontist.  He said it's early, but it's inevitable that Noah's going to need orthodontia so, he thought it couldn't hurt to talk to the orthodontist and see what course he wants to take with Noah's teeth.   I told Walt to start looking for a 2nd job.  Blah. :(

I am still torn between being on an emotional high from the Maroon 5 concert the other night.  It was seriously one of the best shows I've ever seen.  And then I get depressed that it's over and I'm not going again.
  • can't wait for Halloween so I can use this guy all the time:

speaking of Halloween, Jake is already busy trying to figure out what he wants to be.  it changes week to week, but right now, he seems pretty set on being a Ninja Turtle.  Those things are making a comeback, did you know that??  My mom dug out my brother's old stuff the last time we were at her house, you would have thought Jake hit the lottery.  He's been obsessed ever since.  Then he had a sleepover at my parents house 2 weekends ago and they took him to TRU to pick something out, he walked out with a Ninja turtle dress up kit....there have been a few days since then when he answers to nothing but "Leo"  (this is part of the new thing with the ninja turtles...they don't go by their full names anymore, they're Leo, Mikey, Raph, Donnie)

  • Madi calls them the engine turtles. Ha.
  • Both of my kids have already decided on their costumes and kept the same idea for weeks. Although I'm pretty sure that Heather only wants to be Merida from Brave so that I will buy her the bow and arrow set. But if it means no scrambling for costumes in late October, I'll take it!

  • Speaking of Halloween..... anyone else get that firefly magazine in the mail with the $88 costumes? Madi will scan for hours and is set on this mermaid costume. Child, better go butter grammie up for that one. Ha.
  • My kids rarely get sick--but whenever they do DH and I are at odds over what to do.  I think DH overreacts, he thinks I under-react.

For instance, last night around 7:30 Nolan had a fever of 103.  DH gave him Tylenol and insisted I call the doctor.  Who told us to just watch him.  DS was tired, and not really eating, but he was drinking and seemed OK otherwise, no other symptoms.

At 10:30 he woke up and his fever was 104.  Again, no other symptoms.  I wanted to give him Motrin to see if that would bring his fever down (I think it works better), but DH insisted I take him to the emergency room.

I did--they said it was a virus; treat with motrin/tylenol.  If his breathing had seemed labored, or if he wasn't drinking, or if the motrin didn't bring his fever down, etc I would have suggested the ER approach--but because he seemed fine otherwise I was willing to wait it out.

    WWYD?

    :(

FWIW--I also think DH overreacts when he is sick.  Any time he gets the flu or a stomach bug, he thinks he needs to go to the hospital.

DD wants to be Ariel, but cannot for the life of her grasp how she will walk with fins.  She is very perplexed over it.

Dd has been pretty set onher costume for a while. I like knowing in advance! Last year she knew ahead if time but I still had issues. She was Merida last year (have the bow and arrow set). Disney sold out of the crown so early (and Merida only really wears her crown in 1 scene). I ended up making one.

Despite dd's love for ninja turtles (Emmy I just posted to you about them!) she is going to do her 3rd year in a row as a Disney princess (and 4th year in total as princess)...Ariel

  • I cried at daycare this week. We found out that dd's teacher who she loves is leaving next week. We had assumed she would be there till the end of summer when dd leaves.

Her leaving put into motion us and 2 other kids leaving daycare early to start the new place we are going to early. So I had to talk with the director about dd's last day. I had thought we would stay till the end of summer but now dd will be done next week. I cried. I will cry next Friday.

I cannot believe what an amazing experience daycare has been. I know it isn't for everyone and some people have bad things to say about it, but I will truly miss this place. She has made friends with girls that she has known since they were babies...and I have made friends with parents.

The added emotions also are coming from starting a new place and kindergarten around the corner too. I am a mess lately!

  • I, too, am having feelings of conflict after the Maroon 5 concert.  It was so much fun, but I am sad that it's over.  Adam is so freaking hot, I can't even stand it.

Mason has been asking me to make him a whole bunch of costumes for Halloween.  I'm hoping he gets over that, otherwise he's going to be very disappointed!

I would have gave Motrin and monitored all night to see if it dropped. My youngest ALWAYS gets a high fever (103-104) when she gets a tooth. It's so weird. She'll spike a fever and the next day she's fine and happy and has a new tooth.

Kids run high fevers especially at night. Our drs office says to call if over 104. We had 1 time that happened and they told us if it hit 105 to go to ER.
Ultimately though they are more concerned with symptoms...super lethargic (not just tired) and a lower fever is more worrisome than a higher fever but the kid still seems ok.

So I would have probably called the dr at 104 and asked their opinion but from what it sounds like on how your ds seemed the dr probably would have said Motrin and ER if 105.

I try to avoid ER if we can!! I definitely under react and dh over reacts but sometimes that is a good balance. When in doubt I call. One time I thought something was not a big deal... Dr office said it might be and to come in. Turned out dd had MRSA! But other times I've taken her in and things have been nothing.
