So I'm reading Divine Evil, which I believe came out in '92. Both main characters smoke. She hasn't put smokers in her newer stuff (well not very often at all). Do you think it was a sign of the times and that's why she did it? I just finished Genuine Lies and smoking was in that quite a bit too. Just curious since NR seems like such a leader that it seems weird to think of her just following what's popular or accepted at that time.

Re: Fabk, Rev and other NR fans.

  • Oh man! The smoking thing stood out for me too. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I definitely think it was a sign of the times, plus it added to the whole artist thing.

  • I agree it was a sign of the times. Now most of the MCs drink coffee or coke.

  • I'm trying to think of the last time I read about a smoker in an NR book as a MC.  The secondary characters do it sometimes but I can't remember anything about the MCs.

  • @RevJen, it seems like I recall it being more an occasional thing or the character is trying to quit. Did Gage in the Sign of Seven Series? He's just broody enough to have done it but its been awhile since I read that series. Or Cian from the Circle trilogy.

Cian kicked it a couple of hundred years ago.  He did, at several points, get completely shitfaced though.

I haven't read Sign of Seven a while but I think you're right.  Gage was the smoker in that one.  Maybe @myJunegirls will remember for us.

  • Every time someone posts about NR I get all  8-> remembering all the guys in her books lol. I have been on a crazy NR kick for the past year and a half and want to try to read them all by the time I'm 30. But no one IRL really reads her books (since H's grandmother passed away) so I'm alone in my love.

  • @booknerd226, you aren't alone here, that's for sure!  My library got a bunch on their Overdrive, so that's how I've been reading them lately.  What's nice is that its been so long I've forgotten exactly what happened and who-did-it.

Have you read her JD Robb In Death Series???  How 'bout some Roarke!!!
    :\">
  • xDanniellex  Me too! I've been downloading them constantly this year.

  • Romance readers, have you guys picked up any books by Julia Quinn? Thoughts?

  • I feel like I have and enjoyed it.  It was a historical romance which I tend to enjoy.

I feel like this about the Bride Quartet series. I keep rereading them over and over because I love all of the characters.

I haven't read that series yet. I want to read Surrender to Sultry and the next in Death book before reading them. But now I'm super excited. Are they awesome? I assumed they were really wedding-y and I just got married a year ago and didn't want to even think about weddings after all the planning was done lol.
ETA: @RevJen and @pinkybooklover09 The quote feature messed up but I'm responding to the comment about the Bride Quartet series.

  • @booknerd226 - They deal with the wedding industry and peeps falling in love but they're not 100% wedding related. I just love the 4 stories and how all the characters are connected. NR is seriously the best at writing series because they all just feel like one big huggable book!!! <3

    @booknerd
I read all but 3 nr books before30. I can't get my hands on them.
As for the smoking i noticed that as well. I found her original characters annoying and whiny. She made a dramatic shift (imo) in the nineties shortly after devine evil.
  • I think back as far as 1997, her female characters grew more empowered. I can't remember when the Dream series came out; it may have been earlier than that. I think that's when the shift started.

    That doesn't sound too wedding-y! Thanks :)

Which 3? I know there is one random one that is over a hundred dollars because it's so rare. But 3??

I couldn't tell you off the top of my head.I have a database (hello nerd!) But its upstairs on my comp snd i am restricted to the main floor for the next few weeks. Rev maybe right. It may have been the in dreams series that the female leads became awesome.
  • Fab, did you try Turn The Page to see if they have it?

  • There's one called Promise Me Tomorrow or something that I can only find on ebay but that was the only one I saw potentially being difficult to find or read.

  • Turn The Page bookstore is owned by NR's husband.  If anyone can tell you how to get it, they can.  She's doing a lot of rereleases of her Silhouette books as well.

  • Love me some, NR. I also have noticed the smoking in earlier books. Blah. I'm glad that's one thing to have been abandoned in her newer books. I'm so excited for her new Irish set coming out!
