Coupon Newbe

Hello everyone. So I normally use a few coupons here and there when I can find them to help manage a large purchase at like Joanns, or something like that. But the other day me and my fiance went food shopping, im very organized, with a list and use club cards, and always find sales. we normally budget around $200 for food per check that will last us 2 weeks, until our next pay day, but I really want to start using coupons for all our food shopping to help save extra money, sense things are a bit tight at the moment, with a large truck payment and other bills, I though couponing would be a good place to start but I don't really know WHERE to start. any advice? no need to go crazy like those ladies on Extreme Couponing, but it would be neat to save 50-100 bucks now and then. any advice or links would be really helpful.

thank you.

Re: Coupon Newbe

  • There are two coupon sites I use that are blogs from ladies who get the ads and compare them to the coupons out to get you the best deals. One is very local, so unless you live in Houston TX it won't help, but the other is called southernsavers.com It's really helpful with getting good deals at the grocery stores and CVS/ Walgreens (and I think she does Target) She also has a tutorial on how to get started couponing. I don't go as extreme as she does- for one, I only get 1 Sunday paper, but still she has helped me find some great deals!

Great thank you so much! i will check her out. i also found this other site that has kinda like a how-to type blog shes helpful
  • IMO, weusecoupons.com is the best
  • When shopping with coupons, make sure you are buying things you actually need and use.  When I first started using coupons I found myself buying things because I had a coupon for it.

CVS is great with their coupons and sales.  If you have a CVS near you, get an ExtraCare card.  You will be amazed how much you can save on body wash etc.

Meal planning will save you a lot also.  I try to plan our meals based on what is on sale.

    I use two sites -

www.couponmom.com - I like this one because I can sort the list by how much is saved, select the deals I want and print a list, and quick links to printable coupons. There's also a coupon database where you can search for coupons for items you need to buy, like toilet paper.

www.iheartpublix.com - If you have Publix in your area this site is great. She has a "super deals" section and I often find that she has found some additional coupons that couponmom didn't have on their list. She also has a Kroger site, but I don't find it as user friendly.

Our current budget is $100/week, which is ample for us (2 people). At one point when I had just finished school and DH was starting back our budget was a mere $35/week, and we did it with coupons. Our strategy is to get the great sale items, multiples if possible, and plan meals around those items, rather than meal planning then trying to find the things we need on sale.

ETA: Meat is always a big expense, so if you have room in the freezer, stock up when there's great sales. Also keep an eye on "managers special" or mark down items that are nearing their sell by. I check them over carefully and use or freeze quickly, but that's about the only time we get pricier meats like steak or pork loins.
