Hormonal Birth Control=Low Libido. Feeling Hopeless

Hi everyone,

I am relatively new to the site, and wanted to ask if anyone has had good experiences with any particular non-hormonal birth control method. I have tried three or four different kinds of hormonal birth controls, and all of them almost immediately send my libido into the toilet. It is so bad I literally don't even THINK about sex, and this is causing a huge rift between my husband and I.

I am scared to try natural family planning because I feel like I will be constantly worried about becoming pregnant--but I am open to hearing opinions if someone has tried the natural option and has had a great experience.

Please help! I feel somewhat hopeless about the whole situation and feel as if I have no good options.

  • Condoms? :P

I think some IUDs are no hormones or at least very very low.

Have you talked to your doc about it?

  • Since my husband and I are married, he is a no-go on the condoms. I have the Mirena currently which is, from my understanding, only one type of hormone and it still effects me just as negatively.

My doctor seems to not understand that no matter what hormonal method I try, it effects me the same. She seems to just want to jump me from one hormonal method to another.
  • Some women and the pill don;t mix. YOu're one of them.

Many barrier non hormonal methods are excellent:

    Diaphragm
    Condom
    Sponge or vaginal film

I think also you need a new doc. Hormonal birth control is not the answer for every woman.

Try the diaphragm.  It's easy to use --- all you need to do is insert it before you start foreplay --- there's also a way you can work it into foreplay but I find it easier to insert it in anticipation of  sex.

A doc can fit you for it. It's suggested you be refitted for a new one if you gain or lose 15 pounds.

There is also NFP --- natural family planning. Lots of couples use it to avoid pregnancy and also to plan pregnancy.  There are many websites with community forums that you can  use for more info.

Why not talk to your H and see what he thinks?

There's also the option of an IUD but it's another option not for everyone,  I for one wouldn't recommend it. I'm not crazy about the idea of a foreign object inserted into my uterus.

Why does being married mean he no longer wants to use condoms? If it's between having sex or a wife with no libido and causing this rift, shouldn't he be open to condoms? I don't get this argument.

Anyways, I believe the paraguard IUD is non-hormonal if you want to look into that.

  • I have tried many many different pills. I had some success on Yasmin, and ortho tryclin low - your doctor can tell you what the least amount of hormone pills are out there;

Also - are you on any other kinds of medication? For the longest time, I thought it my birth control causing my low libido but ended up being something else entirely.
  • Lots of couples use condoms as their method of birth control. I don't see what his big deal is when it comes to not using one, now that he's married.

There is also a female condom.  FWIW, you might as well use a diaphragm, then, if you're going to insert a bc method --- or use the sponge.
