QOTD 8/12

I saw this last week on another board and thought it would be a good question...

Have you ever or would you ever bring food from somewhere else into a sit down restaurant?

  • I have for kids, but I don't think it's appropriate for adults.

  • No, I don't think that's appropriate. Maybe some snacks for kids, but certainly not appropriate for adults.

  • I can see snacks for kids, but not food from another restaurant. I don't think it is ever appropraite to bring anything for an adult.

  • Other than cake?  No, I understand why people bring their kid's food.  I have a friend that has a kid with Prader-willi syndrome and is on a strict calorie diet.  She would be one that will probably have to bring food into restaurants for a good chunk of her life.  Minnesota doesn't have to disclose calories on the menu like some other states do, so that makes it hard for her to eat out.  For the majority of the population I think it's not ok to do that though.

  • I would not do that. I feel like if you can't find anything you like on the menu, then you shouldn't go to that restaurant.

  • Only if the person eating it had some severe allergy that prevents them from eating the restaurant's food. Or something else like that.

This.  I know people that have done it at fast food places but never at a sit down place.

  • I agree with most people. Even with kids, I'd want my kids eating something there and if they didn't like it, I'll get them something later. I understand when it comes down to having an allergy. Sometimes it's hard to know what's in food and if you have a severe allergy, then maybe. But I would call in advance and check. My SIL was required to avoid dairy and salads for a while and we'd go to Mellow Mushroom, so she brought food with her once or twice.

  • It's inappropriate for an adult.  Children are different.  If it's a situation where you have dietary restrictions, either choose a restaurant that can accommodate you or stay in since you are bringing your own food anyway.
  • I think it's inappropriate for both children and adults. Near my house there is a five guys near a Panera. My nephews will eat Panera but prefer five guys so my SIL let's he kids get what they want and bring it to panera. I think it's so rude plus I'm pretty sure it violates health codes.

There are only two potential times when this is acceptable, IMO. One is in the case of severe dietary restriction, and the other is infants on baby food or breastmilk/formula.
